Lord’s Acre Harvest Festival time is here! It is Saturday, 11-1 starting at 5:30 p.m. There will be plenty of fried fish to eat and pie and coffee to finish it off with. The Silent Auction items are coming in and there are many useful and reasonable cost things to bid on.
One interesting item is a vintage electric lamp from the fifties. It has a large drum shaped shade made of fiberglass. The base is ceramic, hand painted and signed by Vicky, whoever that is. This lamp “appeared” in our rummage barn one day and I knew we had a treasure. They are listed on eBay from $125 on up.
A big thank you to everyone who helped out last Sunday with the chores that David Cleveland or Pastor Ken usually do. Neva Smith and Dan Hancock came in early and made coffee, Milli Hancock sent a large tray of breakfast muffins and coffee cake so the Sunday school class had wake up treats. Doris Morton and Pat Leatherwood pitched in also and locked doors and turned off lights.
Rev. Ken Lunsford has been volunteering on another Walk to Emmaus retreat. This was Men’s Walk No. 402 which was held at Glen Lake Camp at Glen Rose, Texas. There were 35 “pilgrims” attending and many lives were changed.
Laura Leatherwood gave the children’s lesson. She pulled a small bar of soap out of her bag of surprises and ask the children if they thought it would float. They said “Yes it would.” Next she showed them a large nail and asked if it would float, they answered “No!” Laura said put these things in a container of water and the children were correct.
Then Laura told the children a story from the Holy Bible about the disciples being in a boat on the big lake during a bad storm. Jesus was not with them, He had been left to pray alone on the shore. But then they saw Jesus walking out to them, He was walking on the water. Jesus told Peter to come out to Him and Peter did fine at first, but then Peter noticed the wind and waves and began to sink. Jesus had to help him. Laura said Peter sank because he took his eyes off Jesus and became afraid. The lesson to remember is keep your eyes on Jesus.
Pastor Ken was gone from Dublin during Sunday services so our friend Vicky Lackey preached at Laurel St. United Methodist Church. Judy went to the 9:30 a.m. service to see and hear Vicky and she was not disappointed.
Kevin Caraway, a good friend from Deleon, preached a First United Methodist for the 11 o’clock service.
Kevin titled his sermon “Covered in The Dust of Your Rabbi” and he took inspiration from Matthew 14:25-30.
We got a back story on the education of little boys and young men in Jesus’ time.
The very young, age six to about ten went to Bet Safar or House of the Book. Later on from ages ten to fourteen they attended Bet Talmud or House of Learning.
At Bet Talmud the boys were encouraged to ask questions and also give their thoughts and interpretations of scripture. In this way the teaching rabbi could determine the most gifted students who would be trained to be like their rabbi or a Taladim Disciple. The boys who did not make the cut were told to go back home and learn a trade or follow the family business or trade.
Now Jesus was a carpenter in His family’s trade, I guess He did not make some teacher’s cut. And the men He called to follow Him were fishermen and other men who labored with their hands. But Jesus took them and changed the world.
Kevin admonished us to be like Jesus, don’t lose faith, go and make disciples. To go with peace, grace, joy, and hope because Jesus believes in you.
