First United Methodist Church News
June 24, 2018

Community Table was like being a kid again!  We had cony island hot dogs, chips, and dessert.
Vacation bible school will be July 31 and August 1.  It will be held at Perry Hall this year and Primera Iglesia Bautista Church will join First United Methodist Church to work on this project.
Robert and Irene Sohm are so proud of their grandson, Noah Sohm.  Noah was awarded a 911 Kid Hero Award by the Stephenville Police Department Monday evening.  Noah called 911 last March when his mother was unconscious and in medical distress.  His mother is fine now and was smiling at the ceremony.
Laura Leatherwood, Betty Lusk, Barbara Stevens, James and Leta Sage and myself attended the ceremony, and of course, Robert and Irene were there.
Liam Cisneros has been for a visit with his grandparents, Pat and Lisa Leatherwood.
Several members of our congregation are Rotarians and the Dublin Rotary Club had their installation of officers at a picnic in Dublin City Park last Thursday. Liam Cisneros had fun in the park and we learned he loves pickles!
Lawrence Outlaw has been in the hospital, but he is home now and riding his bicycle.
Kevin Stone was beaming last Sunday because he had his parents, Frank, and Judy Stone, in church with him.  Then Kevin was joined by his daughter, son-in-law, and son and that made a pew full.  They were all there to celebrate Kevin’s birthday.
Our scripture reading was from Mark 4:35-41 and Rev. Ken Lunsford prepared his sermon from these verses.
In this part of Mark, Jesus silences the wind and stills the waters.  This happened on the Sea of Galilee which is more than 600 feet below sea level.  Because the sea is surrounded by mountains and so low it has sudden storms.
It is not surprising that a severe storm threatened the boat occupied by Jesus and His disciples. They were afraid and asked Jesus, “Teacher, do you not care if we perish?”
Many of us ask the same question when a “storm of life” happens to us.   Suicide is on the rise in this country.  Our danger is not the external conditions, but these that rage within.  We cry out “Why doesn’t God intervene?” It is at such times that our faith is critical. Believe that behind those dark clouds, the sun still shines, believe in a God who loves you and promised never to forsake you, and believe beyond every cross, there is an empty tomb.
The Psalms say, “He will watch over your life; the Lord will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore.”
