This past Sunday we were visited by the Gideons International. The Gideons are an organization which distributes the Holy Bible around the world. The congregation was pleased to have Gideons Troy Ashcraft, Don Carsten and Jim Tucker visit with us. These gentlemen had visited with the Laurel St. United Methodist Church earlier Sunday.

A card was read from the Cecil Rasberry Family thanking the church for the dinner provided.

We were asked to be in prayer for Alford Havens who will have surgery this week and in prayer for Sibyl Hodges who is in the nursing home. Sibyl has been feeling worse the past several days.

Jack and Norma Parks were happy to have their grandson and his girlfriend with them at church.

Pastor Ken talked to the children and youth about planting seeds. He told them the story about Johnny Appleseed and how he traveled around the eastern United States years ago planting apple seeds. Pastor Ken reminded them if you faith even as small as a mustard seed that you can do great things. He said we should spread the love of Jesus with all the people we come in contact with, just like Johnny spread the apple seeds.

After the lesson the young folks passed out Father’s Day pins to all the men in church. The pin was attached to book mark with a poem written on it. The poem titled “A Father Means” reads in part “A Father means so many things; an understanding heart, a source of strength and of support right from the very start.”

In place of Rev. Ken Lunsford’s sermon, Jim Tucker spoke about the Gideons efforts to supply Bibles to anyone who needs one. They place them in hospital rooms, hotels and motels across our nation. The Gideons will also give out Testaments to school children. They visit jails and prisons to give out Bibles and New Testaments.

Mr. Tucker reminisced about the jail ministry of the late Ed Logan. He talked about the changes Ed made in people’s life when Ed taught them about Christ. The congregation was encouraged to support the Gideons.
