Plenty of members stayed for the Fifth Sunday Luncheon on the 29th and we had a good time. There was a bowl of black-eyed peas, but only the juice was left when I passed by. It disappeared before the chicken or roast did!

The luncheon crowd sang “Happy Birthday” to Debra Hammonds and she received several birthday gifts and cards. A lemon pound cake, her favorite, was baked for Debra and a hunk was sent home with her to enjoy later. Debra said it was the best birthday she had celebrated in years.

First United Methodist Church will participate in the Historical Museum’s “Summer Sunday Afternoon” program. We will be there on August 12 to enjoy the tour. Members should assemble at 2:00 p.m. and the tour will end about 3:30 p.m. We plan on bringing some special photos and artifacts with us so come on down town.

Our congregation extends sympathy to the family and friends of Janie Northcutt Smith. Janie passed away in Friendswood, Texas on July 23, four days before her 65th birthday.

Rev. Ken Lunsford assisted at her funeral by giving her eulogy, obituary and recalling happier times.

Over three pews full of classmates and their spouses attended Janie’s services. At the cemetery The Sons of the Confederacy fired their rifles and cannon in honor of Janie. She was well loved and will be missed.

Butch Belew will have surgery in two weeks at Stephenville Hospital. The procedure is expected to go well, but Carolyn and the family would appreciate your prayers.

Carrie and Carley Belew were our acolytes, Laura Leatherwood served as Worship Leader for the service and Ronnie Belew operated the power point program.

Leta and James Sage were pleased to have their beautiful granddaughters, Reanna and Grace, with them for church.

Rev. Ken Lunsford titled his sermon “Know the Love of God.” He took it from Ephesians 3:14-21.

Pastor Ken said for most of us it is difficult to grasp the fact that the root and foundation of creation is love. It surpasses knowledge, we are so caught up in human life that we have to struggle and pray and meditate in order to catch a glimpse of “how wide and long and deep is the love of Christ.”

This is not a love inherent to human nature, and St. Paul prays we might have the power to grasp a love that flows freely, without consideration of reward or plan for recompense.

The Indians of eastern Nicaragua and Honduras say that love is “pain of the heart.” The Mayan people of Mexico understand the verse from John 3:16 to read, “God so hurt in his heart that he gave his only son.”

Christ died for us while we were yet sinners. God proclaimed at your baptism, “You are my son, you are my daughter, and you are my beloved. I love you!”
