Our church will be presenting a Christmas Eve Candlelight Service on 12-24 in our beautiful sanctuary.  All are welcome to attend, come as you are, with your work clothes on, your uniform on, the children in pajamas or me with my apron on.  Let us all together sing, pray, rejoice and tell the old, old story once again.  Now that is Christmas!

Several of the ladies of our church met at Laura Leatherwood’s home for a Christmas party.  We all brought goodies to share and Laura made wassail to drink.

Laura presented a devotional on Christmas and what a “sweet” time of year it is.  She incorporated a variety of store bought candy into her program.  She began by showing us a bag of Sugar Babies and asked ”what does this mean.”   We answered “the sweet baby Jesus!”  And so the story from Luke proceeded on until Laura got to Smarties which I was not familiar with, but others shouted the Wise Men!

Laura placed all the candy in a sack and drew a name, the winner was Annette Cleveland.  After this we had a “Chinese Gift Exchange.”

The women had such a good time that they decided to do this on a monthly basis.

Rev. Ken Lunsford and Judy went to a Christmas party at the home of Rev. Howard Martin and his wife Carol.  Howard is the pastor of Stephenville First United Church.  Others attending the party were Rev. Mike Hannah and his wife Francis; Mike pastors Greens Creek United Methodist and Rev Laraine Waughtal, pastor of Morgan Mill and Bluff Dale United Methodist Churches.

The group also had a “Chinese Gift Exchange” after a supper of chili, cornbread, and potato with cheese soup. It tasted so good on such a cold night.

On Sunday, 12-15, the prelude was done by Leta Sage on English hand bells; she played “O Holy Night.”

We sang Happy Birthday to those with December birthdays.  They are Tammy Coan, Laura Young Jones, and Norma Parks.  Then we honored those with December anniversaries.  They are Ronnie and Melani Belew and Pat and Paul Beaty.  Congratulations to these folks.

Mary and Mike Haley gave the Advent reading that was missed last week due to services being cancelled.  They lit the second candle on the Advent wreath.  Next

Jennifer Miller and her sons Nolan and Zeke each gave the current Advent reading and lit the third candle on the wreath.

The Children’s Time was next and Laura Leatherwood brought a mirror to show the youngsters.

Laura asked the children if they ever played with a small mirror using it to reflect sunlight or a light in their house.  She held the mirror so it reflected some of the lights in the church.   Laura said the mirror does not make the light, it only reflects it and if you hold up a piece of paper between the light and the mirror, which she demonstrated, it could not shine the light back.

John the Baptist said he was a witness that had come to tell the people about a light that was coming and that light was Jesus.  Laura told the children to be like the mirror and reflect Jesus’ light and don’t let things come between you and God, don’t ever turn away.  Be a good witness like John.

Our congregation was treated to a wonderful hand bell program presented by Leta Sage, Donna Starkey who is Leta’s sister, Laura and Lisa Leatherwood, who are sisters-in law, and Pat Beaty. Leta served as Choir director.  They received a standing ovation from those present.

The English hand bells used were borrowed from another church as Dublin First Methodist has no set of its own.

Rev. Ken Lunsford’s sermon started about snow and ice!  It was based on Matthew 11:1-19.

Pastor Ken asked us if we noticed how the children responded last Sunday when everything was iced over.  They didn’t mind the ice and snow.

Adults see all the weather problems such as automobile accidents, falls, heart attacks and cancellations.  The kids see sleds, snowmen, laughter and no school.  It is a different perspective and I can’t say ours is better than the kid’s.

Jesus didn’t, in fact he was quite clear in saying that the youthful view was crucial when it comes to the life of faith: “I tell you the truth; anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it.”  And He took the children in His arms, put His hands on them and blessed them.

Children are imaginative; they bring us smiles as they learn.  One child prayed, “Our Father, who art in heaven, how do you know my name?”

Children know where to go when they need something and who to ask and ask and ask.

Children understand faith.  A little boy was forbidden to go on a picnic he was looking forward to because he had been naughty.  But later his mother relented and said he could go.  He said “It’s too late, I have already prayed for rain.”  What faith!

After all, “I tell you the truth, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child. . .”

Goodness gracious the cold weather caused many
celebrations in Dublin and Stephenville to be cancelled!

Our Lord’s Acre Dinner was postponed and Sunday Services on 12-8 was cancelled.

Rev. Ken Lunsford and Judy went to a Christmas gathering on Thursday, 12-5, of all the Methodist ministers and their spouses in the West District. Our District Superintendent, Carol Woods, and her husband were our hosts at a restaurant in Early, Texas.

They traveled to Early in the Stephenville First Methodist bus. There were five preachers and four wives rolling along together. Things went fine till they started home and the highway was hidden under a sheet of ice. The bus was heavy and nine well fed passengers made it heaver so it was steady on the road.

Pastor Ken and Judy were thankful to be home and did not venture out again till the roadways were safe.

We have much to be thankful for; I did not hear the fire alarm during this ice storm and do not know of any fatal accidents.

The meeting to begin a new group for United Methodist women for this area is still on for Thursday, 12-12, at Dublin First United Methodist Church form 5:00 till 8:00 p.m. Come on out even if you can’t stay for the entire meeting.

Our congregation extends heartfelt sympathy to Pat Beaty, her children and family upon the passing of Pat’s mother, Jean Volpe.

The Dublin Thursday Club held a Christmas meeting in the foyer of our church this past Thursday evening. The ladies left all bundles up and were met in the parking lot by blowing sleet. We hope everyone made it home safely.

It is Advent in the Christian church and Christmas is coming regardless of the temperature and how far behind we are on our schedule. So let us smile and greet the Lord with gladness.

Here is a poem by Stella Tremble that I enjoy; it is “Christmas Again”

Christmas is a soft wind blowing news from centuries afar
Of the Christ Child in a manger. . and the wise men and the star.
Christmas is a warm fire glowing, kindling kindness in each breast.
Time of gratitude and giving, a season of the year most blessed.
Christmas is a time for singing of the Babe of Bethlehem;
Time of reverence and gladness, time of carol and of hymn.
Christmas is the time a message gives the spirit uplift;
An awareness of the meaning of the world’s most precious gift.
At this time we are reminded of the immortal words again,
Prophesied by songs of angels,“Peace on earth, good will to men!”

The Goodfellows could sure use some donations right now! They usually receive some funds from the offering at the Community Thanksgiving Service, but it was cancelled this November due to cold weather. So please make a decision to help those less fortunate in our own community. You can call First United Methodist for an address to send money or food.

The Salvation Army in Dublin is gearing up for Christmas. To donate money or to volunteer call the First Baptist Church by noon during the work week.

Whatever you decide, do not delay.

The First United Methodist Lord’s Acre Dinner will be on Saturday, 12-7 at 5:00 p.m. No tickets will be sold, admission is free. The members are baking pies, cakes and all kinds of goodies for an auction.

Christmas decorating in our church began on Tuesday 12-3. Oh my things look so festive.

There is a Women’s Christmas Party at Laura Leatherwood’s home on Wednesday, 12-11 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Bring a“white elephant” gift to exchange and some finger food. Be prepared for fun!

There will be a meeting to begin a new group for United Methodist women in this area on Thursday, 12-12 form 5:00 till 8:00 p.m. This meeting is sponsored by The United Methodist Women of the West District. For more information call 254-893-6271.

This past Sunday was the first Sunday of Advent. Adrian Salinas did the Advent reading and the candle lighting was done by Joe, Jaxon, and Raymond Salinas.

The children’s lesson was about Advent. Laura Leatherwood explained Christmas is coming and that is very important. But she also said that we should be ready for the second coming of Christ. Little children and everyone else should live their lives so they are ready to meet Jesus.

Leta Sage brought her wonderful Hammered Dulcimer to church. She played “What Child is This” as an offertory special. The Hammered Dulcimer is an ancient musical instrument and just think over a thousand years ago someone played that same song for the Christmas season.

We were happy to see Cody Belew here with us on Sunday. Cody is on a break from Texas Tech University at Lubbock.

The scripture was read by Lisa Leatherwood, it was Matthew 24: 36-44. This passage is what Rev. Ken Lunsford took his sermon from.

Pastor Ken said this scripture doesn’t sound much like Christmas; it is about the end of days so it certainly isn’t jolly. Yet our church encourages us to read this for today.

Matthew presents us with four scenes, each told with a minimum of detail. The four scenes teach us something about what “that day and hour” will be like. Matthew says that “the Son of Man will come on clouds of heaven with power and great glory.” When God acts, when God reaches into creation in grace and power, some will not be included.

We may not like it that God speaks right before Christmas through Jesus and Matthew with these frightening stories, but God needs to get our attention. We have time to hear, to repent, and to obey.
