Whoops!  I gave the wrong number and destination for the fill a “Shoe Box Christmas Gift” ministry.   It was about 35  boxes and they went to the First Christian Church in Stephenville.  I must not  have had enough coffee to “kick start” my brain when I wrote that one.

There is an All Laity meeting with  our Central Texas Conference Bishop on 11-26 at 6:30 p.m. in Stephenville at  First Methodist Church.

The First United Methodist Lord’s Acre Dinner will be on Saturday, 12-7 at 5:00 p.m.  The dinner is open to the community and there is no set charge.  It will be by donation only.  Pay as you are able.  We will have an auction of baked goods that evening.  So mark your calendar and come on out.

Stormy Armstrong is researching the history of harvest festivals and their original meaning and purpose. Stormy  is writing in-depth article on the subject for the Citizen.

Items for silent auction are still available in the foyer.  Most are under $100 in value.  There are things you don’t see in this area.  Also there are practical things such as half a cord of wood. The church is open till noon except on holidays such as Thanksgiving.

It was announced that “The Hanging of The Greens” will be on Tuesday, 12-3.  That can be hard work but it is great fun also, so anyone that can help decorate for Christmas join in to help.

When celebrations were called for  Pat Leatherwood told us how interesting it had been to work the Six Man Football  Playoff game held here at our Memorial Stadium last Saturday afternoon.  Pat  said he was tired and sore from running around with the down marker.  Pastor Ken  Lunsford volunteered to help and he carried the down chain and pole.  Pastor Ken  said a bunch of big guys was running his way and he dropped the pole and ran  backwards, but not fast enough, he got spiked on top of his foot.  He said it  sure hurt.

So why were these men laughing about being cold, sore, and injured?  Maybe because they made sure some teenagers got a fair game.

Annette Cleveland spoke to us about the Food Pantry holiday bags.  She said she was truly amazed at the generosity of people in our church and our community.

Annette said the goal was met and surpassed and she wanted to thank everyone who gave money or food.

Barbara Stevens served as our Worship Leader last Sunday.  Barbara did a great job; she is usually behind the scene actively helping with church projects.

Lisa Leatherwood gave the children’s program for her sister-in-law, Laura.  Laura was on an outing with her grandchildren.

Lisa talked about the Pilgrims and the hardship they faced in the new world.  The crossing on the Mayflower was  difficult and the first winter many of the group died.

Squanto a friendly Native American helped to teach the Pilgrims how to successfully plant corn.  They had such  a good harvest of corn and other crops they gave a 3 day thanksgiving celebration and invited their Indian friends.

Lisa gave a lesson about the 5 kernels of corn the pilgrims set by their plates. The first one means God loves us, the second that God provides for us, the third stands for thanks for friends  like Squanto, the fourth stand for all the people that love us, and the fifth  stands for God hears our prayers.

Lisa gave out a little package of  5 corn kernels and a plastic bag of popcorn.

Leta Sage did an Offertory Special of “The King Is coming” that was outstanding.  It moved us down to our soul which was what it was intended to do.

Pastor Ken prayed for Don Pendleton and Wilson Sanders by name and many others during his pastoral prayer.

“A King Like None Other!” was the title of Rev. Ken Lunsford’s sermon. The sermon was about the crucifixion of Jesus.

Pastor Ken said the scene of Jesus’ crucifixion shows us what Christ’s kingship was all about.  He was crucified between two criminals.  Matthew call them thieves. Luke uses a word that means professional criminals.

Some people are horrified that the Son of God should die in the presence of such men.  But friends, these criminals were the people Jesus came to save.  Jesus declared in Luke 19:10 “I have come to seek and save that which is lost.”

Remember that every time you are tempted to look down on another human being.  Jesus looks at them as a lost brother or sister who needs help.

“God shows his love for us in  that while we were yet sinners Christ died for us.”  Don’t you want him to reign  in your life today?

The Dublin Community Thanksgiving Service will be on the evening of 11-24 at First Baptist Church. Tell your friends, neighbors and co-workers and everyone participate this year.

Christmas is just around the corner. If you haven’t been to church in a while, come back. If you don’t have a church home there are plenty in this area that will be glad to have you. Don’t keep putting it off; a great weight will be lifted when you find a church where you feel at home.

We were happy to have a visitor with us Sunday and hope he makes our church his home.

Neva Smith announced more money is still coming in from the rummage sale. I haven’t figured out how that happens, but we are glad to take it!

Sammy Moore announced that his father, Sam Moore, will start treatment for cancer.

Pastor Ken asked for prayers for Wilma Davis who has gone to Baltimore, MD to seek help for her problems and for Wilson Sanders who has serious kidney problems. Both of these folks are part of Pastor Ken’s congregation at Laurel St. United Methodist Church.

Nancy Wooldridge will have surgery in December at Stephenville. Nancy wanted to offer thanks to those who have been praying for Jim Roach, Dublin’s Code Officer. She also wanted to praise God for the current good news that Jim has received from tests run. We hope and pray that Jim finds answers to his difficulty.

Laura Leatherwood reported that she carried 23“Shoe Box” Christmas gifts to the Presbyterian Church in Stephenville. This is part of Franklin Graham’s world ministry to poor children. Thank you to everyone who participated in this cause.

During children’s time Laura talked about fear, paralyzing fear. Laura brought a small rock to show, she asked “what is this rock doing?” Joe Salinas answered “It is just laying there.” Laura said yes, it does nothing. Sometimes we are afraid to do things and set like a rock. But we need to talk to Jesus about our fears. We should do what we need to do; God will help us through it. We should always trust Him.

Laura gave out little trophy cups with a piece of gum and paper with a Bible verse on it.

Brady Moore served as acolyte and assisted with the offering. Alford Havens and David Cleveland took up the offering.

A wonderful duet of “Sweet, Sweet Spirit” was sung by Pat Beaty and Leta Sage for the Offertory. Wow, they can harmonize.

Judy Lunsford preached at Greens Creek Methodist Church last Sunday at 9:00 a.m. She enjoyed seeing her many friends who attend there and visiting with David Mayfield.

Rev. Ken Lunsford and Judy choose the same verse for their lessons. It was Luke 21:5-19. In this part of Luke Jesus talks about the destruction of the temple in Jerusalem and the end of the world.

Jesus says no matter how wonderful the Temple is and how large the stones are it is made from, the day will come when it is brought down. He also tells his disciples there will be many wars and signs to come. Many false prophets will rise up and declare that “They are the one you are waiting for.” But do not listen to them.

The Temple on the mount in Jerusalem in Jesus time was rebuilt by King Herod. It could hold thousands of worshipers. The interior had been scraped down to the bedrock and the bedrock remains.

Our faith needs to be like the bedrock. We need to withstand much difficulty. The Church of Jesus Christ at
work in the world is not mortar and stone, it is the believers who witness for
Christ. The Church is the flesh and blood body of Christians who represent the
body of Jesus.

Stay firm and keep the
faith.

Thank you, thank you to the people of Dublin and surrounding area that support our Rummage Sale. This support helps the First Methodist help others. I knew a lot of folks looked forward to shopping for necessities such as bed linens, kitchen ware, and furniture, but I had more people say God Bless You on their way past the check out table than ever before. It is that “God Bless You” that keeps us going year after year, not the funds we raise. All the unsold items have been donated and distributed. Whoopee, praise the Lord!

A tremendous thanks and appreciation goes to everyone who helped unload the storage barn, set up the items, sort and mark. The “Rummage Queens” had lots of help this year. Our Queens are Neva Smith and Kathy Logan, and they did a great job. Pastor Ken Lunsford and faithful member, Ray LaBaume worked hard, they carried and lifted the heavy items. They also delivered the furniture for us.

Ola Mae LaBaume once again baked plenty of goodies and sent to the weary work crew.

Members of Laurel St. United Methodist Church are pitching in to help with “holiday bags” for the Food Pantry. These items or a monetary donation are needed by 11-17.

Annette Cleveland still oversees this important project. The Food Pantry at First Methodist, with help from many sources, continues to serve the community.

November birthdays are Judy Lunsford on 11-2, Alford Havens, 11-6, Kristi Gordon, 11-11, Nancy Wooldridge, 11-18, Ken Lunsford, 11-21 and Juanita Duncan on 11-22. Jack and Norma Parks celebrated an anniversary on 11-5.

A Harvest Festival dinner and live auction has been planned for 12-7.

Items for silent auction continue to be displayed in the foyer of the church. New items come in everyday.

Laura Leatherwood served as Worship Leader and taught the children’s lesson.

Laura talked about honoring our veterans who have served in the armed services. She showed the children pictures of the soldiers training. Laura said they must train even in bad weather. The Army does an advertisement that says ”Be All That You Can Be, Be Army”

Laura said that Christians need to train also. They should pray, read the Bible and be like Jesus. Then she gave out wrapped cookies with a picture of a soldier on them. The cookie said “Be All That You Can Be for God.”

Laura and Jim Leatherwood were pleased to have their grandchildren, Ally and Silas, with them in church.

The Ushers taking the offering were David Cleveland and Joe Salinas.

Rev. Ken Lunsford’s sermon was taken from Luke 20:27-38 and titled “God of the Living!” These passages tell
about a question the Sadducees asked Jesus. The Sadducees did not believe ia
resurrection, a Heaven or a Hell. They only recognized the first five books of
the Bible. So the question they posed to Jesus about life after death is quite
surprising.

 Jesus replies “The people of
this age marry and are given in marriage. But those who are considered worthy of
taking part in the age to come and in the resurrection from the dead will
neither marry nor be given in marriage, and they can no longer die; for they are like angels. They are God’s children, since they are children of the
resurrection. But in the account of the burning bush, even Moses showed that the dead rise, for he calls the Lord “The God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.’ He is not the God of the dead, but of the living, for to Him all are alive.”

Jesus quoted from the Torah and the story of Moses. God said to Moses “Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy ground.” “I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob.” God did not say, “I was the God.” Jesus says this is evidence in the Torah that life after death exists.

Heaven is not our responsibility that is God’s responsibility. Our responsibility is how we live life here and now.

Life beyond the grave is a reality. Because He lives, we, too, shall
live.

Our volunteers are hard at work getting ready for the Fall Rummage Sale to be held on 11-8 and 9.  We have a fellowship hall full of items to “keep house
with.”  There is an especially large amount of very nice Christmas décor.  This may be the year to go all out and really decorate inside and out.

We have  been too busy this year to plan and prepare a Harvest Festival dinner and live  auction so the membership has a “silent auction” going on in the foyer.  We have  many beautiful and interesting items at auction to raise funds for various  projects.  The church office is open from 8:00 a.m. till noon and anyone wishing  to bid on an item is welcome to come in and check out the goodies.

The church office will be closed on 11-11 for Veterans Day.

Kaitlyn  Gordon came to church on crutches; she told us she had a dislocated
kneecap.   What a trying thing for a small child to face.  Kaitlyn you are in
many prayers  this week.

The children’s lesson was about the “Golden Rule.”  We may have a lot of rules to follow, but the Golden Rule is one of the best.

Laura Leatherwood talked to youngsters about how we should treat each other.   She said try to think about how the other person feels.  We should care about people  and be kind to them.

Rev. Ken  Lunsford took his sermon from Luke 6:20-31.  These verses tell about the Beatitudes.   Luke’s version is scaled down from the Sermon on the Mount, which appears fuller in Matthew.

Jesus starts with “Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God.  Blessed are you who are hungry now, for you will be filled.”

But there  is a down side. Jesus notes that those who coast through this world, those who  are well off and happy should anticipate a reversal of fortunes in heaven.  It  is not their status that is the problem.  It is because they are content where  they are in life.  They drift along without spirit, devoid of connection and  compassion.

The church today is full of protesting “Protestant” people focused on protesting against things instead of having a positive, propelling conviction that is eternally looking forward to the next new Kingdom of God.  Protestantism can only continue as a “kick start” movement, heading down new roads and open to new  expressions of the Spirit.

Christ goes on His message to tell His disciples “Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you.” Even  when they drove nails into His flesh, He prayed for His adversaries and He forgave them.

Christ ends his message with “Do to others as you would have them do to
  you.”
