Lord’s Acre Harvest Festival time is here!  It is Saturday, 11-1 starting at 5:30 p.m.  There will be plenty of fried fish to eat and pie and coffee to finish it off with.  The Silent Auction items are coming in and there are many useful and reasonable cost things to bid on.

One interesting item is a vintage electric lamp from the fifties.  It has a large drum shaped shade made of fiberglass.   The base is ceramic, hand painted and signed by Vicky, whoever that is.  This lamp “appeared” in our rummage barn one day and I knew we had a treasure.  They are listed on eBay from $125 on up.

A big thank you to everyone who helped out last Sunday with the chores that David Cleveland or Pastor Ken usually do.   Neva Smith and Dan Hancock came in early and made coffee, Milli Hancock sent a large tray of breakfast muffins and coffee cake so the Sunday school class had wake up treats.  Doris Morton and Pat Leatherwood pitched in also and locked doors and turned off lights.

Rev. Ken Lunsford has been volunteering on another Walk to Emmaus retreat.  This was Men’s Walk No. 402 which was held at Glen Lake Camp at Glen Rose, Texas.   There were 35 “pilgrims” attending and many lives were changed.

Laura Leatherwood gave the children’s lesson.  She pulled a small bar of soap out of her bag of surprises and ask the children if they thought it would float. They said “Yes it would.”  Next she showed them a large nail and asked if it would float, they answered “No!”  Laura said put these things in a container of water and the children were correct.

Then Laura told the children a story from the Holy Bible about the disciples being in a boat on the big lake during a bad storm.  Jesus was not with them, He had been left to pray alone on the shore.  But then they saw Jesus walking out to them, He was walking on the water.  Jesus told Peter to come out to Him and Peter did fine at first, but then Peter noticed the wind and waves and began to sink.  Jesus had to help him.  Laura said Peter sank because he took his eyes off Jesus and became afraid.  The lesson to remember is keep your eyes on Jesus.

Pastor Ken was gone from Dublin during Sunday services so our friend Vicky Lackey preached at Laurel St. United Methodist Church.  Judy went to the 9:30 a.m. service to see and hear Vicky and she was not disappointed.

Kevin Caraway, a good friend from Deleon, preached a First United Methodist for the 11 o’clock service.

Kevin titled his sermon “Covered in The Dust of Your Rabbi” and he took inspiration from Matthew 14:25-30.

We got a back story on the education of little boys and young men in Jesus’ time.

The very young, age six to about ten went to Bet Safar or House of the Book.  Later on from ages ten to fourteen they attended Bet Talmud or House of Learning.

At Bet Talmud the boys were encouraged to ask questions and also give their thoughts and interpretations of scripture.  In this way the teaching rabbi could determine the most gifted students who would be trained to be like their rabbi or a Taladim Disciple.  The boys who did not make the cut were told to go back home and learn a trade or follow the family business or trade.

Now Jesus was a carpenter in His family’s trade, I guess He did not make some teacher’s cut.  And the men He called to follow Him were fishermen and other men who labored with their hands.  But Jesus took them and changed the world.

Kevin admonished us to be like Jesus, don’t lose faith, go and make disciples.  To go with peace, grace, joy, and hope because Jesus believes in you.

Community Table is on Wednesday, October 29 and we serve from 5:00 till 7:30p.m.  The menu is hot dogs with all the yummy things that go with them.  There is always nice desserts to enjoy along with your meal.        Let your friends and neighbors know about Community Table, they may not get a copy of the Citizen or read about Methodist news.  Tell them this meal is free of charge with no strings attached.  If someone from our church or the community wants to see our kitchen operation or help out, I encourage you to come in and join the fun.

For some folks just sitting in a pew on Sunday is not their calling.  Many young folks don’t come to church or have a church home. They think the “old time” religions have out-lived their usefulness.  Their brand of Christianity is physically doing something for the less fortunate in their area.  This community meal is an opportunity for action, come and see what together, we can do.  Jesus said when you feed the hungry and clothe the naked you have done it for me also.

The Fish Fry is getting closer and I am ready to eat a stack of fish!  Saturday, November 01 is the big night. The Lord’s Acre begins at 5:30 p.m. and the cost is $10 for adults and $5 for children.

Get your unique items for the Lord’s Acre Silent Auction turned into the church. Right now the items for auction range from a “Santa” birdhouse, a casserole carrier, to Dr Pepper memorabilia - so anything goes!

There was two pews full of guests last Sunday, they were here to show support for Danny Hancock and his parents, Dan and Milli Handcock.  Little Danny was presented for Christian baptism at the altar-rail and baptized by Rev. Ken Lunsford.  This was a rather long ceremony and Danny was brave and sweet about it.

After services, the Hancock family invited Rev. Ken and his wife Judy to a buffet luncheon at their country home.  Pastor Ken served as a State of Texas Game Warden along with officer “Mutt” Handcock who is a cousin to most of the Hancock family at the luncheon.  They found plenty to talk about.  Also Judy enjoyed reminiscing about Dublin High School folks that she and Ronnie Hancock used to know.

There was a connection to Milli Hancock’s side of the family present at the luncheon.  Milli’s mom is from
a section of Germany that Pastor Ken’s grandmother was from.  It seemed to be a God blessed and God inspired afternoon of fellowship.

Lee and Betty Lusk asked for prayers for Lee’s sister-in-law, Bobbie Lusk.  She is facing weeks of chemo and radiation treatment.

The scripture read by Laura Leatherwood was from 1 Thessalonians 1:1-10.  This scripture is a letter from Paul, Silvanus, and Timothy to the Thessalonian’s church.  If the books of the Bible were put in chronological

Order, the first book would be Paul’s first letter to the Thessalonians, dated around 45 AD.

The New Testament begins with the biographical account of Jesus’ life, it tells us who His family is and the circumstances of His birth.  But the first communication is the apostle Paul’s written testimony which predate those of the gospels.  This is the first and oldest voice of Christian faith put into writing.

What a great first impression it is.  Paul is writing to a new family, a community of people who have chosen to believe in and follow the person of Jesus the Christ.  Paul writes a loving message offering encouragement and support.

You know you don’t have to have a lot of money to come to church, there is no membership fee. It is not a country club.  You don’t have to have expensive clothes, come and see.   You can’t wait till you are sin free, everyone sins and falls short.  Church is a hospital for sinners.

Come on down like the TV announcer says, you could win the prize, which is peace, happiness, and eternal salvation!

The tickets for the Lord’s Acre Fish Fry are distributed to the membership so expect to be sold one, or a handful, anytime now.  The Fish Fry is on Saturday, 11-01 in the Clay Annex.  Take-out orders should come in early at 5:00 p.m.

We are having a great silent auction for the Lord’s Acre this fall.  Anyone wishing to bid on an item may stop by the church foyer during the week day, from 9:00 a.m. till noon.   This is open to the public and the auction will continue till the Saturday night of the Fish Fry.

A reminder that the First Baptist Church, the Assembly of God Church, the First United Methodist Church and others are having a sack-lunch picnic in Dublin City Park on Sunday, 10-19 at noon.  This is a musical fellowship so be ready to play an instrument and sing along.

Judy Lunsford reported she was asked to preach at Greens Creek United Methodist at the 9:00 a.m. service.

Their pastor, Mike Hannah and his wife Frances, were in North Carolina visiting their son.

This past Sunday was Youth Sunday at First Methodist and Conner Moore served as our Worship Leader with Cole Moore, Cole’s friend, and Joe Salinas performing as acolytes.

We sang “Happy Birthday” and then “Happy Anniversary” to all those celebrating in October.

Lisa Leatherwood taught the children’s lesson.  Lisa ask the children about scarecrows, she wanted to know “What do you use a scarecrow for?”  The children answered “To keep the birds away from the garden or field.”

Lisa agreed that was right.  Then she asked what they were afraid of, most were scared of the dark except for little Jaxson Salinas who said he wasn’t afraid of anything.

Lisa talked about driving back from Deleon on Friday night in a bad storm.  It was so scary that she prayed for the Lord to watch over her and then she felt better.  She said we can all pray when we feel afraid.  Lisa read from Psalms in the Bible.  One psalm said “The Lord is with me, I will not be afraid.”

Brady Moore preached about how we are forever changed by our relationship with God.

We become lifelong students, all of us searching and learning more.  This is a journey of growing faith we share with pilgrims we meet along the way.

We become teachers as well, we teach all who we come in contact with.  Those around us observe and learn from our actions.  What will they learn from us?

In Matthew 14: 13-21 Jesus sees a teaching opportunity so He preaches to a large crowd.  He even feeds 5,000 people with an amount of food that originally wouldn’t even feed a young man.

The youth today hear too often how little we have to offer and the young and old alike hear more often how they lack enough qualifications or education.  Yet here is Christ saying so much can be done with your gifts when they are given to God.

So much can be done when we quit wrestling with God, and begin instead to walk with Him.

Come and visit us in the big church on the hill and dress casual.

The First Baptist Church, the Assembly of God Church, the First United Methodist Church and possibly others are having a picnic in Dublin City Park on Sunday, 10-19 at noon.  Bring your own sack lunch and drink, no food is provided, also lawn chairs would be good.  There will be music and singing, so if you play an instrument, please bring it along.  This is a community event.

Doris Morton was in an automobile wreak at the traffic light on the north side of town. Her car was totaled but Doris walked away with only bumps and bruises.  We offer to God all the praise and thanks for Doris’ well-being.

Cliff Wooldridge will have elective surgery this week and we hope he does as well as Nancy has.  Cliff has become the chief cook and bottle washer in the Wooldridge household since Nancy returned to the workplace.

I think they could use a casserole or care package of sandwiches while Cliff is “off his feet” for a while.

Nancy says their son’s house in the metro-plex completely lost its roof during last week’s severe storm and there was a lot of rain damage.  Everyone is thankful no one was injured in the storm.

Pastor Ken Lunsford preached the funeral for Steve Patterson on Saturday, 10-4.  The service was held at Victor Cemetery.  Our church provided a meal for the Patterson family in the Clay Annex.

Remember that Brady Moore will be preaching on 10-12 and that other youngsters will be serving in church.

There will be a baptism on 10-19.  Let us support the Hancock family with our attendance.

Get your donated items for the Lord’s Acre auction into the church and let the office know what you have brought.

Wish Eddie and Harlan Raley a happy anniversary, Wednesday 10-1, was their anniversary.

Karen and Ricky Rowe celebrated their anniversary on 10-2.

Pat Beaty’s birthday is 10-9 and Barbara Bean’s is 10-16.  Barbara is in the Mesa Vista Inn Health Center in San Antonio.  For a complete address for Barbara, call the church office.

Rev. Ken Lunsford’s sermon was based on Philippians 3: 4-14.  Paul writes in these verses that “In Christ I have found a righteousness that is not my own and does not come from the Law but rather from the faithfulness of Christ.”

The good news is that God did not send us more rules and regulations, but a Redeemer, God did not send up a statement but a Savior, the good news is that God did not send us a principle, but a person.  And that person is Jesus the Christ, the Messiah, Son of God, and friend.

The greatest moment in your life and mine comes when we say from the innermost depths of our being, “Jesus Christ, you are the son of the living God.”  When you say that and mean it, you will have found the treasure you have been searching for.  You will have found the bridge that will take you safely across every chasm, challenge, and problem of your life.

Jesus is the bridge over all troubled waters.

Big News; the Lord’s Acre and Fish Fry has been moved to Saturday, November 1, 2014! So if you are not going to be in a deer camp in the wilderness, come and have a great evening with the First Methodists.
The Community Table supper last week fed over 100 people.  If you have not been by to eat with us you are missing out!  Those who feel guilty eating for free can pay it forward by helping someone else.  We have taken donations from the public if they feel called to do so.
Virginia Stephen is so pleased with her cataract surgery, she says the world is a beautiful place and she intends to enjoy it.
The atrium garden looked clean and neat last Sunday, and that is thanks to Ray LaBaume.  Pastor Ken went to check on “how bad” the garden looked and caught Ray working hard mowing and trimming.  We send a big thank you to Ray for all his “behind the scene” endeavors for his church.
Mark those calendars for Youth Sunday, 10-12.  Brady Moore will be preaching that day and other youngsters will be serving in church, so please support these young men.
On 10-19 Danny Hancock will be presented for baptism.  Danny is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Dan Hancock and a cousin of Neva Hancock Smith.
Our church family extends sincere sympathy to the family of Steve Patterson.  Steve is the son of our dear friend and member, Wanda Patterson.  Wanda has returned from out of town to her apartment in Three Oaks.
Joe Salinas and Cole Moore performed as acolytes Sunday, Conner Moore, David Cleveland, and Cole Moore took the offering, and Brady Moore served as Worship Leader.
Sammy and Jill Moore were very proud of their sons and the service they do for their church.  Jill and Sammy also had fun playing with Jill’s little niece, Emma, who is a cutie.  We are happy they brought Emma to church.
The children’s lesson from Laura Leatherwood was informative.  “Miss Laura” brought a big plastic trash bag and a yard rake to help explain the lesson.
Laura talked doing chores at home.  Some children clean their room, some help with the dishes, and some must help in the yard.
Laura told a story about a father who asked his son William to rake the leaves up, but William said “I need to finish my model airplane.”  The father asked his other son, John, to rake leaves and John said “sure I will.”  But William decided to rake the yard and John kept on watching TV.  Now this story is like a parable that Jesus told in the Bible in the book of Matthew.
Jesus talked about a farmer who asked his son to go work in the vineyard, but the son said “I will not!” But later on the first son changed his mind and went out to the vineyard.   So the man asked his other son to work and the son said “I go sir”, but the second son did not go to work.  Now Jesus asked, “Which son did his father’s bidding?”  Well the youngster all said the one who really did the work!  Laura said the message means don’t just say it, do it.  Don’t just say you are a Christian, be a Christian.
Rev. Ken Lunsford’s sermon was titled ‘Our Actions Speak Louder than Words” and it was also taken from Matthew 21:23-32.  This is the lesson of saying one thing and of doing another.  Pastor Ken expounded on the lesson the children received.
Pastor Ken asked us if we got the point, for the message of repentance is for all of us.  Sometimes we are blind to God’s actions in our life. We are all talk and no action.  We refuse to let God break into our lives and help us make a new start by His grace.  A farmer had two sons – which one describes you?
Email Pastor Ken at fumcdublin@embarqmail.com or contact our office secretaryoffice@embarqmail.com.
Our church is all dressed up, but we aren’t, we are casual.  Come and see for yourself.
