The Bible Study on Tuesday mornings continues. We are learning and having fun.

Sunday, 9-29 is Fifth Sunday Singing followed by a covered dish dinner! Come off the farm and down out of the hills. Don’t miss this great time of fellowship.

We hear there is a fund raiser in the future for David Mayfield of Greens Creek. The Mayfield home will need some alterations to accommodate a wheelchair and David will need a modified pickup truck to drive.

Brady Moore did another great job as Worship Leader. Conner Moore and David Cleveland passed the offering plates and Cole Moore served as our sole
acolyte.

We know that these youngsters are tough on the football field and apparently working and speaking in front of a crowd doesn’t faze them either.

Laura Leatherwood brought a billfold to the children’s lesson. It was a “lost” billfold.

Laura asked the children what we should do with the billfold. One youngster said leave it at the church office so the owner can come and get it. Laura asked “what if you are at the soda shop and pay for your drink and then get too much change back”. The young folks said give it back. One young fellow said if you weren’t honest you would turn into lava. I think he was referring to Hell.

The lesson taught us all to be honest, this pleases God; He smiles down upon good children.

Brady read the scripture from Luke 16: 1-13 and these passages are what Pastor Ken based his sermon on.

Rev. Ken Lunsford preached on “You cannot serve God and wealth!”

Before John Wesley became the founder of Methodism he was a teacher at Oxford University in England back in the 1700’s. Wesley started out with 30 pounds per year of pay. His living expenses were 28 pounds so he gave 2 pounds away. Over the years Wesley’s income increased to a little over 1,400 pounds by then he was living on 30 a year and gave away the rest of his resources.

You see John Wesley felt that it was not his standard of living that should rise, but the Christian’s standard of giving. What a great lesson Wesley taught us. It is the same lesson found in the parable Jesus taught in Luke.

We in the church get this wrong. We come up with all these reasons why we should give. There is the business approach, give because we need 5% more money this year than last year. We try flattery. You have the means; only you are wealthy enough to give this amount. We try guilt trips. You are better off than 95% of the world’s population. We use greed. You will get back more than you gave. We try ego. Give this and we will name the building after you. And we do give for every reason except the right reason; Giving because Christ supremely gave. Give because we are not truly human until we become a giver. Give to keep grace alive within us. Give because it reflects the nature of a God who gives.

 Do you have character? Use
your worldly wealth graciously, responsibly and with fidelity. Your future, true
riches in heaven depend on it.

Remember the Photo Directory sittings begin on Monday, 9-23 at 2:00 p.m and concluding Tuesday 9-24. If you have forgotten your appointment time, we will send reminders or you may call Kathy Logan, Barbara Steven or Wanda at the Church Office because they have the schedule.

The Administrative Council will meet on Wednesday, 9-25 at 6:00 p.m. Any member is welcome to attend and all committee chairpersons need to be there.

Fifth Sunday Singing is Sept. 29th so if you have a request for a special song please let the office or music team know, so the music team can be ready to play and sing.

The music was so good this past Sunday with Pat Beaty on the grand piano and Leta Sage on the keyboard/organ. They harmonized so well on “Seek Ye First.” It kept going through my mind how fortunate this congregation is to have such talent in our church.

A rack of coats and jackets have shown up in the foyer, it tells us to hurry and get our own donations turned in. If you can’t find good clean ones at a yard sale they can be purchased new from Family Dollar Store and Walmart for a reasonable price. Don’t leave a child out in the cold this winter.

James and Leta Sage will be celebrating an anniversary on 9-28. Congratulations to a great couple.

David Mayfield of Greens Creek is off the ventilator machine. David will be coming home soon. Sammy Moore announced that his father, Sam Moore, will be having surgery soon. Jill Moore told us that her mother, Jo Ann Pate, was in the hospital and is improving. The Moore Family needs our prayers and support.

Christa Pack was added to our prayer list by Karen Rowe.

Our congregation extends sympathy to the family and friends of Eddy Caudle of Stephenville. In rodeo and cutting horse circles Mr. Caudle was legendary.

Brady Moore served as our Worship Leader on 9-15 and did a fantastic job. We were all impressed with this young man’s ability to lead us in worship. Thank you Brady!

Laura Leatherwood brought a “lost and found” box to show the children. They found several items in the box including her glasses.

Then Laura told the children about the Shepherd who left the 99 sheep to look for the one sheep that was lost. Next she told about a woman who had ten silver coins but lost one of them. The woman swept her house looking in the dust for the coin. She found it and celebrated that what was lost is now found. Laura said that is the way God feels when lost and sinful people come back to Him. God and the angels in heaven celebrate their return.

“I was Lost, But Now Found!” This is what Rev. Ken titled his sermon and gleaned it from Luke 15: 1-10.

Pastor Ken said he loves how the chapter begins.“Now the tax collectors and sinners were all gathering around to hear Jesus.”They were hungry for Christ’s message and they were not coming out of curiosity. They were there out of a deep spiritual need. They needed His message of salvation.

Secondly they were acknowledging that need. Many people need to come to Christ; few are willing to admit it. The tax collectors were considered traitors to both Israel and God. They were despised by the citizens and were cut off by the religious authorities. The sinners were the immoral and unjust who did not keep the Law. They were prostitutes, liars, thieves and murders. So when Christ came preaching deliverance from sin and hope of the Kingdom of God they flocked to hear Him.

Jesus not only preached to these rejects, He visited them in their homes and ate with them! The Pharisees and teachers were offended by Jesus’ actions. Jesus told the crowd the parables about the lost sheep and the lost coins because Jesus came to save that which is lost. That is the heart of the Gospel. That is good news because we all sin and fall short.

We had a room full of ladies for the first lesson of our Bible study on Tuesday, 9-17. We saw a video, read from our Bibles and answered questions from our study book all in one hour. Juanita Duncan was thoughtful enough to bring bottled water for us and Pastor Ken made a pot of coffee. Be there or be
square!

Butch and Carolyn Belew announced that their daughter and son-in-law Tammy and Gene Coan were to get another foreign exchange student. This one will be from Czechoslovakia. How wonderful for them to open their home to this youngster.

Our church is going to have a Fall Bible Study and Juanita Duncan
is organizing it. Juanita said she is not going to teach the study, that we all
are going to share in giving our interpretation of the lesson. It will be
What in the World is Going On by David Jeremiah. The study books will cost $10.00. If you are interested see Wanda Myers, our church secretary to order a book. The study starts on Tuesday, 9-17 at 10:00 a.m. and will run for 10 weeks. Non-members are welcomed to join us.

On 9-15 the First Christian Church of Stephenville which is located at 450 West Tarleton St. will have a program on Operation Christmas Child. The presentation starts at 6:30 p.m.

The sittings for the photo directory will start on 9-23 at 2:00 p.m. and conclude on 9-24. Please keep your appointment for this important
project.

We are again collecting new and gently used coats for the Coat Drive. Turn them in to the church office.

The Fifth Sunday Luncheon is 9-29, so be planning a delicious dish to
bring.

Norma Westmoreland is not feeling well and has been put on our prayer
schedule.

On 8-25 Rev. Ken Lunsford preached from Luke 13, he titled his lesson “Jesus Broke the Law – to Help Someone.”

“Those Who Humble Themselves will be Exalted” was the sermon on 9-1. It was taken from Luke 14: 1,7-14.

The Pharisees grumbled about the kind of people who came to hear Jesus. Those who gathered around to hear the Master were the common, uneducated people. The Sadducees and Pharisees held them in contempt. They regarded these followers as scum. It particularly galled the
Pharisees when Jesus said that these persons of low social stature would go into the kingdom of God before they, the religious elite, would.

Jesus declared, “I have come to seek and save that which was lost.” On another occasion He said, “The well have no need for a physician, but those who are sick.”

It is ironic that this is where Jesus placed his emphasis, on the poor, the blind, the oppressed and the captives. And yet these are the last people on earth that the average church is geared to reach.

We want to hang out with other people whose politics, world-view, and lifestyle match theirs. We like people who are like us, that is only natural, but it does not make it Christian. The Christian church is one institution in our society that does not exist for the benefit of its own members. We are to be the body of Christ reaching out to those in need. Most churches don’t really want people who have problems because those kind of folks may cause problems.

Un-churched people have the perception that if they go to a church for help, they will be judged not helped. My friend, Jesus wants every person in this world, rich and poor, seeing and sightless, athlete and disabled to find a safe, secure, happy place in His family.

We would love to see your
face in church next Sunday.
