Sunday, 9-29 is Fifth Sunday Singing followed by a covered dish dinner! Come off the farm and down out of the hills. Don’t miss this great time of fellowship.
We hear there is a fund raiser in the future for David Mayfield of Greens Creek. The Mayfield home will need some alterations to accommodate a wheelchair and David will need a modified pickup truck to drive.
Brady Moore did another great job as Worship Leader. Conner Moore and David Cleveland passed the offering plates and Cole Moore served as our sole
acolyte.
We know that these youngsters are tough on the football field and apparently working and speaking in front of a crowd doesn’t faze them either.
Laura Leatherwood brought a billfold to the children’s lesson. It was a “lost” billfold.
Laura asked the children what we should do with the billfold. One youngster said leave it at the church office so the owner can come and get it. Laura asked “what if you are at the soda shop and pay for your drink and then get too much change back”. The young folks said give it back. One young fellow said if you weren’t honest you would turn into lava. I think he was referring to Hell.
The lesson taught us all to be honest, this pleases God; He smiles down upon good children.
Brady read the scripture from Luke 16: 1-13 and these passages are what Pastor Ken based his sermon on.
Rev. Ken Lunsford preached on “You cannot serve God and wealth!”
Before John Wesley became the founder of Methodism he was a teacher at Oxford University in England back in the 1700’s. Wesley started out with 30 pounds per year of pay. His living expenses were 28 pounds so he gave 2 pounds away. Over the years Wesley’s income increased to a little over 1,400 pounds by then he was living on 30 a year and gave away the rest of his resources.
You see John Wesley felt that it was not his standard of living that should rise, but the Christian’s standard of giving. What a great lesson Wesley taught us. It is the same lesson found in the parable Jesus taught in Luke.
We in the church get this wrong. We come up with all these reasons why we should give. There is the business approach, give because we need 5% more money this year than last year. We try flattery. You have the means; only you are wealthy enough to give this amount. We try guilt trips. You are better off than 95% of the world’s population. We use greed. You will get back more than you gave. We try ego. Give this and we will name the building after you. And we do give for every reason except the right reason; Giving because Christ supremely gave. Give because we are not truly human until we become a giver. Give to keep grace alive within us. Give because it reflects the nature of a God who gives.
Do you have character? Use
your worldly wealth graciously, responsibly and with fidelity. Your future, true
riches in heaven depend on it.
