Keep this date open! November 9 has been set for the Lord’s Acre Fall Festival at Dublin First United Methodist. We are having a brisket dinner with all the trimmings.

Congratulations to Eddie and Effie Leatherwood on their 40th wedding anniversary. They celebrated with a great party at their home on the 17th. The food was fabulous and the fellowship was flowing.

Eddie Raley served as our Worship Leader on 8-18. Eddie did a superb job guiding us through the service.

Lately a lot of squash, okra, cucumbers and tomatoes are being left near the coffee and donuts. It pays to “check out” that area. Praise the Lord for His abundance and good folks for their generosity.

Our congregation extends sincere sympathy to the family and friends of Red Pendleton. Pastor Ken Lunsford conducted the funeral service, assisted by Rev. Dean Bradley.

Pastor Ken flew in from his vacation in Denver, Colorado to be with the Pendleton family and the members of Laurel St. United Methodist Church. Later Pastor Ken flew back to Denver to drive back with his wife Judy. They enjoyed their visit with their daughter and her family.

One highlight of the trip for the Lunsfords was a trip to the Denver Zoo with their 13 year old granddaughter, Kendall Lois Sack. Kendall was familiar with the zoo and served as their guide.

We extend sympathy to the family of Johnny Wayne Hampton. Johnny is a nephew of Jack Parks and a cousin of Karen Rowe.

The congregation was sorry to hear of the death of Dell Higgins. Dell was a resident of Golden Age Home and a good friend of Debbie Hammonds.

Erika Grimm has had surgery and is recuperating well. Erika lives in Cedar Park, Texas and is the daughter of Karen and Ricky Rowe.

Rev. Ken Lunsford titled his sermon “One of the World’s Great Sermons.” Pastor Ken was referring to the words of the 11th and 12th chapters of the Book of Hebrews.

Pastor started with this story. There was a pastor who asked his wife after one of his better efforts at the pulpit, “Tell me honey, how many really great preachers do you think there are in the world? She answered, “There is one less than you think.”

Let’s begin with a definition; “Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.” The writer then shows us faith in action.

By faith Abel offered a better sacrifice to God than Cain, which showed that he was righteous. By faith Enoch was taken up so that he did not see death. By faith Noah responded with godly fear when he was warned about events he had not seen yet. By Faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to a place to receive his inheritance. These people and many others through faith “conquered kingdoms, enforced justice, received promises, stopped the mouth of lions, quenched raging fire, became mighty in war and put foreign armies to flight.” But there is more. “Some were tortured, others suffered mocking, scourging, chains and imprisonment. They were stoned. Sawed in two, and killed with a sword. Some went about in animal skins, destitute, afflicted and wandering over deserts and mountains living in dens and
caves of the earth.

Faith is a total commitment of all you are and all you hope to be to the One who created you and gave His own Son in your behalf.

We dress casual at First Methodist Church and would enjoy having you visit with
us.

Neva Hancock Smith’s birthday party was well attended on the 3rd. In fact they were running out of room in the Clay Annex! There were all kinds of food and vases of beautiful flowers of different colors. Hot pink and yellow were the main colors used to decorate.

Neva brought two tables full of photos and scrapbooks. There were many mementos displayed that were dear to her heart. Congratulations Neva.

The Outreach Committee has scheduled a meeting on 8-14 at 6:30 p.m. If you are on this committee or an interested church member please attend this planning session.

Painting is finished in the foyer and the pictures need to be re-hung.

Nancy Wooldridge served as Worship Leader and Lisa Leatherwood gave the children’s lesson.

Lisa told the youngsters about a story in the Bible. Lisa asked them if they ever “people watched.” She said Jesus went to the temple and was watching the people. He saw many people that day, some were rich and had nice clothes and bags filled with coins. They gave a lot of money to the offering, and then Jesus saw a poor woman come by and put in two small copper coins. Jesus went to His disciples and said that woman has put in more than anyone because she gave all she had.

Lisa told us that it is not the size of your offering but what is in your heart that counts.

Rev. Ken Lunsford titles his sermon “Take Care, Be on Guard.” Pastor Ken based his message on Luke12:13-21.

Jesus told a parable about a rich man who built bigger barns to store his bountiful crop. The man said to himself I have plenty, I will enjoy life; I will eat, drink and take it easy.

But God said to him, “Fool, tonight you will die. Now who get the things you prepared?” This is what will happen to those who hoard for themselves and are not rich toward God.

How many of us have a garage filled with “stuff?”How many of us have a storage unit because we have too much “stuff” to keep at home?

A comedian did an entire monologue on the“meaning of life is trying to find a place to put your stuff.”

Jesus did not find fault with the rich farmer making a good crop, He didn’t fault the man for eating, drinking, and relaxing. Jesus did that as well. The rich man’s problem was all his focus was on himself to the exclusion of all others. Idolatry begins with an “I.” At no time did the man invite God’s participation in his decisions or factor in other people, not even his family, into his planning.

Jesus’ parable points to a need for a focus on faithfulness to God. The wealth we can accrue in this world is a rich relationship with God. When your life is demanded of you, that
relationship will be the only treasure that travels with you to heaven.
