The baby shower for Erika Grimm was great fun. A lot of family and friends attended; the youngest guest was 18 days old. Erika and Andrew received many useful gifts for the little girl expected on 11-02.

Erika and Andrew Grimm attended church with us on Sunday before returning home to Cedar Park, Texas.

Butch Belew reports he is feeling better and looking forward to using his new hip joint and our congregation is looking forward to seeing Butch back in church.

Jill Moore says her mom, Jo Ann Pate, continues to do well.

Prayers were requested for Taylor Williams, an eight year old boy, who is in the hospital. Also prayers were asked for Don Proctor who is hospitalized.

David Cleveland reported only three workers showed up for the playground work night. They got some things accomplished and enjoyed a great meal provided by Kathy Logan, Neva Smith, Juanita Duncan, Doris Morton, Barbara Stevens, and Judy Lunsford. The cooks out-numbered the workers.

Our acolytes were Leah Kunselman and her cousin Corbin Gordon. These “little folks” did an exuberant job of lighting the candles and hopped and skipped back to their seats. Oh, if only all members were that happy to serve the church!

Leta Sage, our song leader, sang a special for us titled “Knowing You.” It was beautiful.

Rev. Lunsford gave us a good, old fashioned sermon on “backsliding.” Pastor Ken explained that is a Methodist term you rarely hear today. He has been preaching for 12 years and Sunday was the first time he spoke on the topic.

The term of backsliding goes back to the 1600’s and became a stock phrase in many denominations. It referred to those once faithful individuals who had lost interest in their Christian pilgrimage.

Pastor Ken wondered if it was too easy for people to join the Methodist Church, do they take their vow to uphold the United Methodist Church by our prayers, our presence, our gifts, our service and our witness seriously enough?

We live in a day of cheap grace, and far too often crowd approval and peer pressure result in conversions that are not genuine. But that does not get to the heart of the problem. Most backsliders do so, I am convinced, because their spiritual buckets develop a leak and much of their commitment seeps out.

There are periods in our lives when we are more susceptible to falling away. Our priorities get flipped and we make excuses why we can’t get to church.

Our hobbies, jobs, school projects, and even family crowd God out of the picture. But these excuses will cripple the Christian life. All living things can die through neglect.

We can come back to a closer walk with our Lord. The distance you have put between yourself and God can easily be overcome. It is vital for the state of your soul and because others need to see you being faithful. You have a witness in this world.

Jesus asked Simon Peter, “You do not want to leave too, do you?” Peter answered Him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. You are the Holy One of God.”

Cody Belew has a birthday on 8-24, and then Barbara Stevens and Karen Rowe share the 25th.

It is still wedded bliss for Ola Mae and Ray La Baume who have an anniversary on 8-28. Congratulations!

Remember there is a baby shower for Erika Grimm on Saturday, 8-25 at 1:00 p.m. They are expecting a little girl.

Butch Belew continues to heal from his surgery and looking forward to being out and about. Butch and the Belew family thank those who have prayed for a successful outcome and supported
the family during this time.

Nancy and Cliff Wooldridge report their grandson who had surgery is doing much better. This young man who is 14 years old has had string of hard luck with his health. He needs our sincere prayers and a 4 leaf shamrock would not hurt either.

Pastor Ken continues to meet with Mike Hannah on Fridays. Rev. Hannah is mentoring Pastor Ken on his journey as a Local Pastor.

Virginia Stephens told the congregation her 4th great-grandson will turn one year old on 8-24. We think she was rubbing it in a little with four greats.

Several members asked for prayers for their children or grandchildren who are heading off to distant colleges.

School will start here in Dublin on Monday, 8-27, and so watch out for the children and extra vehicle traffic in the streets.

Lisa Leatherwood returns to teaching this term. We wish her
well.

Rev. Ken Lunsford based his sermon on Ephesians 5:15-20. The text describes what a community of faith might look and even smell like; it is the “fragrance” of Christ.

Paul was writing the church at Ephesus and giving advice how to live a fulfilling life. Paul had found great joy in living for Christ and he wanted others to experience that same joy. Paul had found meaning and purpose and a reason for being.

Paul writes do not get drunk on wine but to be filled with the Spirit, speaking to one another with psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit. He asked them to sing and make music from your heart to the Lord.

Here is the secret to a wondrous life: “Be very careful how you live not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity.”

Laurel  St. United Methodist Church and First United Methodist had a wonderful time at  the Historical Museum’s “Summer Sunday Afternoon” program.   Mary Yantis had a  lot of stories to tell us, and then she asked the audience to tell of memorable  people and occasions.  We brought some scrapbooks and photos from our churches  that had not been displayed before. The museum had old photos, newspaper  clippings and an old quilt covered in stitched autographs to view.  The quilt  was made for Rev. Walker many years ago and returned by his survivors to  Dublin.

A few folks from other denominations were present for the program and we all enjoyed the Dublin Bottling Works soda pop that Mary furnished.  Kathy Logan and Neva Smith brought cookies and brownies for dessert.

Remember  to donate to the supply closet at the Dublin Elementary and Intermediate  schools.  Items needed are; red pencils, glue sticks, notebook paper, no. 2  pencils, crayon boxes, spiral notebooks, 2 inch notebooks and highlighters. Bring supplies by the church office or call and someone will pick up your donation.

There will be a “Baby Shower” for Erika Grimm on Saturday, 8-25 at 1:00 p.m. at the church.  Erika is Karen and Ricky Rowe’s daughter.  Call the office to find out where Erika is registered and call Khristi 254-977-2570 if can NOT attend.

Another “Work Night” is planned for 8-22 at 6:00 p.m.  The crew will be renovating the  playground equipment.  The ladies will provide food and drinks.

Wanda Patterson is moving out of town to live with her daughter.  Our congregation will miss Wanda and so will the Senior Citizens Center.  Wanda’s sister, Jo Ann Ragan, will miss her also, so give Jo Ann a call and cheer her up.

There is  a Methodist “Pool Party” scheduled at the Dublin Swimming Pool on 8-29 from 6:00  to 8:00 p.m.  A supper of hot dogs and all the trimmings will be provided that  night.  So mark your calendar and dig out that old swim suit.

Expressions of sympathy go out to the Moore family of Gustine on the tragic loss  of their daughter.

The youngster’s lesson was about Heros.  Pastor Ken talked about the kind of people they should look up to as heroes.

He said Jesus  makes a great hero and people who try to live like Jesus make good role models.

Rev.  Lunsford based his sermon on Ephesians 4:25 and 5:2.  Paul was writing from  jail, he instructed the church at Ephesus to maintain their unity and to develop  the gifts God had given them.  Paul told then they were doing God’s work on  earth.

Paul  is speaking to the modern world today about its hostility and anger.  We have  road rage or scream at the television and computer.   People seem to be angry  and upset most of the time.

Paul  is telling us to get rid of all of our hostility, to be kind,
compassionate and  forgiving.  Most of us would agree that is easier said than done.  But Paul  managed to do it and he was writing from prison, a fate he did not  deserve.

Paul  tells us to not grieve the Holy Spirit of God.  Get rid of all bitterness, rage  and anger, along with every form of malice.  We should be forgiving each other,  just as in Christ; God forgave you.

Anger  is a spiritual problem that requires a spiritual solution.  Pray for help to  remove this problem, then you can move on to that high level of spiritual maturity, that is returning hatred and anger with love.

Laurel St. United Methodist Church along with First United will participate in the Historical Museum’s “Summer Sunday Afternoon” program.  The fun starts on August 12 at 2:00 p.m.   We look forward to this special event hosted by Mary Yantis.  Mary has some yummy treats for us at the end of the tour.

Our congregation is helping out the supply closet at the Dublin Elementary and Intermediate schools.  They are needed by 8-27, which is the first day of school.  Items needed are; red pencils, glue sticks, notebook paper, no. 2 pencils, crayon boxes, spiral notebooks, 2 inch notebooks and highlighters.  Bring any supplies by the church office during the week; the office is open until 1:00 p.m.

If anyone in the community wishes to help with this project it would be appreciated.

The Small Church Initiative group will meet at Greens Creek United Methodist Church on 8-11 from 10:00 a.m. till 2:00 p.m.

Kaitlyn Gordon performed as our acolyte Sunday.  It was  her first time to do the job all by herself.  I know she missed her cousins’ help but she was brave and did her best.  Judy Lunsford served as Worship  Leader.

Pastor Ken talked to the youngsters about looking for signs. He held up some paper signs and asked what they meant and the children could name each one.   Pastor Ken told them we look for sign to tell us what we should do or where we should go.  He said the Bible has signs that instruct us also.  He asked the youngsters to look for the signs God sends to us.

Rev.  Lunsford titled his sermon “Live a Life Worthy of Your Calling!”   It was the  4th in a series based on Ephesians.

Pastor  Ken told a story about the late country comedian Jerry Clower.  Jerry was a very  religious man.  Jerry invited his 14 year old daughter Sue and one of her  friends to go to the Country Music Awards in Hollywood, Calf.  But Sue had to  decline the offer because there was a church activity she did not want to  miss.

Jerry  said tears of joy welled up in his eyes and he wanted to sing the Doxology to  think his daughter would rather participate in a church activity than go meet  celebrities in Hollywood.

Pastor Ken asked us “How important is church to you? Do you believe God has a plan for our church?  Do you believe that preparing this world for the coming of  the Kingdom of God by proclaiming the Gospel of Jesus Christ, is the most important work any group of people can do?  Or do you look at the church as
just  another organization that is good for the kids or perhaps good for your business?”

The church is God’s agent, Christ’s body at work in the world!  Certainly He saved the world through the cross, He gave his life and by his life we received life eternal.  But Christ is still saving the world today by the church in service to  the world.  If we fail to do what Christ has called us to do, then Christ’s saving action will be incomplete.

Each  of us has a gift to be used in God’s service. The crisis of the church today is  one of commitment.  Jesus said. ‘If anyone would be my disciple, he must take up  his cross and follow me.”

Make  attending your church a happy priority in your life.

Plenty of members stayed for the Fifth Sunday Luncheon on the 29th and we had a good time. There was a bowl of black-eyed peas, but only the juice was left when I passed by. It disappeared before the chicken or roast did!

The luncheon crowd sang “Happy Birthday” to Debra Hammonds and she received several birthday gifts and cards. A lemon pound cake, her favorite, was baked for Debra and a hunk was sent home with her to enjoy later. Debra said it was the best birthday she had celebrated in years.

First United Methodist Church will participate in the Historical Museum’s “Summer Sunday Afternoon” program. We will be there on August 12 to enjoy the tour. Members should assemble at 2:00 p.m. and the tour will end about 3:30 p.m. We plan on bringing some special photos and artifacts with us so come on down town.

Our congregation extends sympathy to the family and friends of Janie Northcutt Smith. Janie passed away in Friendswood, Texas on July 23, four days before her 65th birthday.

Rev. Ken Lunsford assisted at her funeral by giving her eulogy, obituary and recalling happier times.

Over three pews full of classmates and their spouses attended Janie’s services. At the cemetery The Sons of the Confederacy fired their rifles and cannon in honor of Janie. She was well loved and will be missed.

Butch Belew will have surgery in two weeks at Stephenville Hospital. The procedure is expected to go well, but Carolyn and the family would appreciate your prayers.

Carrie and Carley Belew were our acolytes, Laura Leatherwood served as Worship Leader for the service and Ronnie Belew operated the power point program.

Leta and James Sage were pleased to have their beautiful granddaughters, Reanna and Grace, with them for church.

Rev. Ken Lunsford titled his sermon “Know the Love of God.” He took it from Ephesians 3:14-21.

Pastor Ken said for most of us it is difficult to grasp the fact that the root and foundation of creation is love. It surpasses knowledge, we are so caught up in human life that we have to struggle and pray and meditate in order to catch a glimpse of “how wide and long and deep is the love of Christ.”

This is not a love inherent to human nature, and St. Paul prays we might have the power to grasp a love that flows freely, without consideration of reward or plan for recompense.

The Indians of eastern Nicaragua and Honduras say that love is “pain of the heart.” The Mayan people of Mexico understand the verse from John 3:16 to read, “God so hurt in his heart that he gave his only son.”

Christ died for us while we were yet sinners. God proclaimed at your baptism, “You are my son, you are my daughter, and you are my beloved. I love you!”
