I must make a correction, our new members are Gene and D.J. Klutts.  I misspelled their last name last week!

The second half of our April birthdays are Laura Leatherwood, Ray La Baume, Annette Cleveland, Lisa Leatherwood and Kathy Logan.  Best Wishes for a Happy Birthday!

Doris Morton brought two grandchildren to church services on 4/19.  They are always well behaved and went to the front for Children’s Lesson.

On Saturday, 4/18, Pastor Ken Lunsford attended a course of study presented by the North Texas Conference of the United Methodist Church held in Richardson, Texas at the Arapaho United Methodist Church.

“Be a Reliable Witness” was title of Rev. Ken Lunsford’s sermon.  He took his message from Luke 24: 36-48 which tells about Jesus appearing to and speaking with the Disciples after His resurrection.

There are many things we believe in this world that we haven’t seen.  As children we learned that the earth is round.  We had not traveled into space and looked back at the earth, but we believed what we had been taught.

We are here in church because two thousand plus years ago a man named Jesus rose from the grave.  Oh we weren’t there, we did not see it but a host of reliable people did see it.  And we have their testimony.

If Jesus were merely a bodiless apparition it would be too easy to dismiss His appearance as a mass psychosis brought on by their grief.  But they touched His nail-pierced hands and feet and His sword-pierced side.  Jesus even ate a meal with them, He was no ghost!  He was the risen Christ, of this they had no doubt.

Jesus tells His disciples that they are to preach repentance for the forgiveness of sins in His name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.  He says “You are witnesses of these things.”  And what fearless witnesses they became.  No matter how they were treated they would not recant their faith.

The disciples spoke with Him and ate with Him and eventually, they died for Him.  There is no doubt of their reliability.  And now we seek to be reliable witnesses as well.  “He lives,” says the old Gospel hymn. “He lives! Christ Jesus lives today. . You ask me how I know He lives, He lives within my heart.”   That’s the best evidence of the resurrection.

Oh happy day, our congregation has two new members!  Gene and D.J. Klutts came forward to move their letter of membership from Canyon Lake United Methodist Church to Dublin.  We are so glad they did because they are such nice people and they have already been pitching in and helping on projects.

We have so many members with April birthdays I am dividing the month!

Ricky Rowe, Harlan Raley, Mike Haley, Adrian Salinas, and Betty Lusk deserve a phone call or card wishing them a happy birthday.

The Ladies Bible Class are still meeting on Wednesdays at 10:00 a.m. and are now into the New Testament, so come on in and join us.

Several members of our church family were out last Sunday, they traveled to North Richland Hills to see the baptism of Clarence Edward Leatherwood V.  The child is the grandson of Eddie and Effie Leatherwood.  God bless little Cal and his family.

With so many missing from services last Sunday we changed things around.  Nancy Wooldridge served as Worship Leader, Pastor Ken Lunsford gave the Children’s Lesson, and Judy Lunsford operated the power point.  Joe Salinas helped his grandfather, David Cleveland, take up the offering.

Nancy Woodridge read our scripture lesson from Acts 4: 32-35.

Rev. Ken Lunsford titled his sermon “Christians and Grits!”   There is no such thing as a grit.  They don’t come by themselves, they are in a community of other grits.  You can’t order just one grit.

We Christians are a lot like grits.  Some of us may be grittier than others but we’re not here on our own.  We are in community with others! We are part of Christ’s body and we live in union with Christ and one another.

Let us listen to the words of Luke, the writer of Acts, as he describes the earliest Christians.  Luke says, “All the believers were one in heart and mind. No one claimed that any of their possessions was their own, but they shared everything they had.”

They felt a responsibility for their friend’s well-being, no one forced them to share.  That is Christianity in its purest sense when people feel the presence of the Spirit so strongly they must take care of each other and let no one go needy.

There are all kinds of needy folks in the world, it can be financial, emotional, social, and spiritual.  If we are going to testify to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ to those we encounter then we should minister to their needs.  It is my prayer that we do it cheerfully and generously.

Need guidance, call the Compassion Counseling Center at Oakdale United Methodist Church in Stephenville.  This service is provided on a sliding fee schedule.  http://www.compassioncounselingcenter.com

We hope you had a glorious Easter!  There were many opportunities for worship here at First United Methodist during Holy Week.  At the Maundy Thursday service there was hymn singing, scriptures were read by five members of the congregation, preaching by Pastor Ken, and communion was given.

Maundy or Holy Thursday, commemorates the evening just before the crucifixion when Jesus and his disciples ate together for the Last Supper.  It was there that Jesus instituted the Eucharist or Holy Communion.

Sunrise Service on Easter morning was moved indoors but that did not dampen our spirits!  We had a lively service in the sanctuary with a powerful message brought by Rev. Gerald Freeman of Dublin Congregational Methodist Church.

The Offertory music was performed by Kenzie Roan, she sang “Before the Throne of God Above,” Kenzie was accompanied on the piano by her mother, Jana Roan.

After this early worship a breakfast was provided by the “Jacob’s Ladder” Sunday School Class.  David Cleveland, Kathy Logan, Stormy Armstrong, Judy Lunsford, and Karen Leigh are to be commended on a great job.

The offering plate collection and funds given at the breakfast will be equally divided among the Christian Women’s Job Corp, Salvation Army, and Goodfellows.  All funds will be used in Dublin and that is a wonderful thing.

The lovely flower arrangement done in white sitting on the altar was in memory J.C. Humphries and his son Mark Humphries.  They were given by Stormy Armstrong and her mother Pat Humphries who lives in Bryan, Texas.

During the 11 o’clock service the scripture read was John 20: 1-9 and it was from this story that Rev. Ken Lunsford based his sermon titled “While it Was Still Dark.”

John writes in his gospel, “Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene went to the tomb.”  She was on a desperate journey to finish preparing Jesus’ body for burial.  The preparation was cut short on Friday because at sundown the Sabbath began and all work must stop.  But Mary found the large stone rolled away and the tomb empty!  Mary ran to tell Peter and another disciple about this.  Mary believed the body had been taken away.  She was “in the dark” about the truth she was seeing.  And for a while all the disciples “were in the dark” also. It is a dark world without Easter.

A father who had lost his son in an accident on Good Friday spoke at his son’s funeral on Easter afternoon.

“Until you stare death eye-to-eye, Easter is just a word.  It’s a nice day with bunnies and eggs, but when someone precious to you dies, Easter becomes everything.  It’s an anchor in a storm, a rock on which to stand, a hope that raises you above despair and keeps you going.”  It is a dark world without Easter.

There is amazing power in the hope of Easter, it bursts forward with every blossom of springtime.

You are free to believe or reject the Good News of Easter, but as for me, and I believe for you, we will leave this service with hallelujah ringing in our ears and hearts.  Jesus is alive and because He lives we shall live also.

     Christ is risen!  Hallelujah!
