Brady and Cole Moore served as acolytes on 2-24 and assisted with the Offering. Lisa Leatherwood was our Worship Leader.

Laura Leatherwood presented the children’s lesson. Laura spoke about love and understanding; she told the children about God’s unconditional love for them. This is God’s grace and we should love unconditionally also.

Pastor Ken Lunsford continued with the Lenten Series and preached from the Book of John 3: 1-21.

Pastor Ken recalled a story Rodney Wilmouth once told about a man who died and showed up at the pearly gates of Heaven. St. Peter was waiting there. The fellow said “I want to enter Heaven,
“You may enter, “replied Peter, “if you have accumulated 100 points on earth.”

The man revealed he had been baptized in the church and scarcely missed a Sunday in his life. “That’s good,” said Peter that is one point!” “Only one point said the man.” He quickly thought of other good works.

“Well I served on the Administrative Board for 20 years, and I taught Sunday school for 25 years.” Peter said again, “That’s good, you get another point.” “What! Only one more point! Well I tried to live a good life and to be a good father and husband.”

Peter said “That’s worth one more point.” By then the man cried out, “Oh my, the only way I will get into Heaven is by the Grace of God!”

“That’s right! said St. Peter with a smile on his face. And that is worth 97 points, come on in.”

Despite the witness of scripture and our own experience, we continue to question grace.

Nicodemus questions Jesus “How can a man be born again?” “How can he return to his mother’s womb?” Jesus told him you must be born of water and the Spirit. All through the New Testament, the notion of rebirth, being born again, or recreation occurs.

Paul writes in II Corinthians 5:17 “If any person is in Christ, he is a new creation, the old has passed away; behold the new is come.”

Our salvation is not our doing, but it is God’s grace.

Daylight savings time begins on Sunday, March 10, oh boy! Palm Sunday occurs on March 24. Let us give thanks to the Lord and attend church.

Our church Administrative Assistant, Wanda Myers, has been producing some beautiful Sunday Bulletins. The term “frame quality”comes to mind. Our church started making its own bulletins as a budget saver, then Wanda found some extra large cream colored paper in a cabinet and she put her imagination to work. Whether it is a spiritual scene such as the Ash Wednesday cover of open hands holding ashes or last Sundays cover of red wildflowers they are eye-catching and beautiful. Thank you
Wanda!

The Ash Wednesday service on 2-16 was filled with scripture reading and old-time hymn singing. Pastor Ken titled his sermon“Showy Religion!” It was gleaned from Matthew 6:1-6 and 16-21.

Saturday, 2-16, the Clay Annex was full of people helping Doris Morton celebrate her 90th birthday. Doris had a passel of family
of all ages there and friends from everywhere.

A table was set up with two old windows that used to be on Doris’ home and the windows were covered with photos of Doris through the years. Many birthday cards were on the table. Canning jars filed with pink and orange flowers decorated the tables. It’s been said that Doris has canned more vegetables than Del Monte. The big birthday cake was decorated in pink and orange also.

Judy Lunsford served as Worship Leader on 2-17. Pat Beaty was at the piano as usual and in fine singing voice as she helped us sing some great old hymns such as “What a Friend We Have in Jesus.”

We enjoyed a beautiful vase of cut flowers on the altar provided by the family of Doris Morton. They were placed there in her honor and celebration of Doris’ 90th birthday.

Our congregation prayed for many across the world, but we especially prayed for Ruthie Bradley and Jo Ann Pate who broke her hip.

“The Life Question: What are you looking for?”This was the theme of Rev Ken Lunsford’s sermon.

The life question Jesus asked the disciples of John the Baptist was “What are you looking for?” This is the first of several questions Jesus asks in the Gospel of John. John the Baptist knew who Jesus was, and John said, “Behold the Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world.”

What you are looking for tells the story of who you are. If you find what you are looking for and don’t know Jesus, you will still need more to make you happy.

There is no life, no abundant life, no life with meaning for now or eternity apart from Jesus Christ. Hear what Jesus says to us: “But I am come that you might have life and that you might have it abundantly… take up your cross and follow me.” Introduce someone to Jesus Christ, the Lamb of God.

Come and visit us, we would love to see your smiling face at First United Methodist Church, 630 Highland Ave.

February 10 was Transfiguration Sunday and we celebrated Holy Communion for the second time this month. It was also Boy Scout Sunday. Pastor Ken recognized David Cleveland as a Scout Leader and Lee Leatherwood who serves as liaison from our church to the
local scouting organization.

Laura Leatherwood brought Valentine cards to teach the children’s lesson. Laura said God sent us a valentine when He sent Jesus. The Bible says in John 3:16 that God so loved the world, He sent His Son. We should also show someone we love them.

All the members with February birthdays were serenaded with “Happy Birthday.”

Carolyn and Butch Belew received a round of applause for their approaching 50th wedding anniversary. 2-15 is the big day!

Stormy Armstrong announced her parents, Mr. and Mrs. J.C. Humphries, celebrated 67 years together on 2-7. Happy Valentine’s Day to these folks with long-term romances!

Pastor Ken prayed for Laura (Young) Jones and Charlene Johnson by name. Laura has been in the hospital in Fort Worth.

“This Is My Son, Listen To Him!” This was the title of Rev. Ken Lunsford’s sermon from Luke 9:28-43. This Gospel story tells us about “The Transfiguration of Jesus.”

Many of us have had times when we felt we were on top of the world, really happy, confident that we were close to God. We call these “mountaintop experiences,” and we hate to come down off that mountain! But to freeze that one moment in time shuts off the
possibility of the next moment.

For Jesus this was a time of confirmation and affirmation of his ministry. For Peter, James and John it was a brief glimpse of the transcendent, the reality that lies beyond everyday life.

Peter wanted to build a tent and camp there on the mountain, but Jesus quickly led the disciples back down into the daily routine. They went back to the life in the valley of teaching, preaching, and caring for the broken and hurting people of the word they lived in.

The Jesus who leads us to those spiritual high places also goes with us to the valley. Jesus is there in the valley of fears and tears of everyday life, Jesus is there at the failures of His followers.

On the mountain of Transfiguration, God reveals His plan. It is found in Jesus Christ. We are to listen to Him. Have you listened to His parables, learned from His teachings, watched His miracles, and felt His sacrificial love? Don’t forget those in the valley below; go share with your brothers and sisters to help them in life’s struggles.

Lent began with Ash Wednesday on 2-13 and so we start our journey to Easter.
