Leta Sage served as Worship Leader while Lee Leatherwood was out of town. Leta did all the announcements and Bible reading due to Pastor Ken having a respiratory infection and laryngitis. This saved Pastor Ken’s voice so he was able to preach.

Judy Lunsford brought Debbie Hammonds to church, Debbie enjoyed being out and about with her new friends. Judy visited with Elizabeth Young after church and admired Elizabeth’s room at Golden Age Home. She has wall of great family photos. When leaving Elizabeth’s room Judy met Laura Jones and James Fritts in the hallway. Laura looked great
and was feeling good. She and James were delivering clothes and other items to Elizabeth.

Lisa Leatherwood was beaming when she brought her brother David Newton, sister-in-law Sylvia, and niece Yolanda with her to church.

For our second hymn of the morning the overhead read “please be seated” but Leta told us to stay up because the next song was“I Stand Amazed in the Presence,” and we just could not sit through it.

“Listen to My Son!” was the title of Rev. Ken Lunsford’s sermon, it was based on Mark 9:2-9.

Pastor asked the congregation if they had anyone in their family who has a listening problem. Then he did a head shake and made a tsk, tsk sound. He said his wife Judy had the first hand up.

Pastor Ken noted he did not say a hearing problem; many people have good hearing but are selective in what they hear.

There is an old saying that God gave us two ears but only one mouth indicating that God wanted us to spend twice as much time listening as
talking.

Our lesson is from that magnificent scene on the Mount of Transfiguration. Jesus took Peter, James and John with him up a high mountain where they were all alone. It was there that Christ’s transfiguration occurred. His clothes became dazzling white and Elijah
and Moses appeared and began talking with Jesus.

Saint Peter wanted to build three shelters, one for Jesus, Elijah and Moses. The Bible says Peter was frightened and did not know what he should
say.

Then a cloud appeared and covered them and a voice came from the cloud: “This is my Son, whom I love. Listen to Him!”

Our primary responsibility is to listen to Christ. Paul Tillich, a theologian, wrote that “The first duty of love is to listen.” That’s very true. Are you willing to fulfill the first duty of love and listen with your eyes, listen with your heart, to take time to listen to your family, friends, and particularly to
Christ?

“This is my Son, whom I love. Listen to Him!”That is not just good advice that is a command from God.

On Saturday, 2-25 there will be a Small Church Initiative meeting at Greens Creek United Methodist Church. The meeting is 10:00a.m. till 2:00
p.m.

Please come, it will be good to meet with other small churches and get new ideas on how to grow our membership and offer more to current members.

Our congregation plans to participate in the St. Patrick’s Day activities. We have some fund raisers and outreach programs planned. Call the office for an opportunity to serve on St. Patrick’s Day, 3-17. We can all help our city in some capacity that day; call the Chamber of Commerce and
volunteer!

Rev. Ken Lunsford and our Worship Committee met Wednesday, 2-8 to plan for the coming year. Ash Wednesday will be a special service and held at Laurel St. United Methodist Church. Rev. Lunsford attended an all day conference at First Methodist in Brownwood on Saturday, 2-11.

Lee Leatherwood continued to serve as Worship Leader this past Sunday. Lee volunteered for the month of February.

Our acolytes in training were Leah Kunselman and Kaitlyn Gordon. They received assistance from Josh Kunselman who is Leah’s father and Kaitlyn’s uncle.

Ushers for the New Year were Alford Havens and James Sage. Our past ushers have done an excellent job and now they can relax and sit with their
family.

We learned that Sadie Ethetton is back in Community Home. Sadie suffered a fall and was in the hospital for a while. She has been through a lot of pain and discomfort and needs your prayers. Sadie received love and care from her son and daughter-in-law, Less and Betty Ethetton, during her difficulties.

Elizabeth Young has a room of her own at Golden Age, but she is close to the rooms of Sibyl Hodges and Debra Hammonds.

We are glad our friend Mr. L.E. Malone is up and going and doing so well after his recent stroke. How fortunate to have a good EMT for a son who could make a quick assessment of his problem.

Remember Barbara Bean who is in Mesa Vista Inn, 5756 N. Knoll Dr., San Antonio, 78240. We miss being in church with all these ladies.

It was great to see Monita Cebell, and Elissa, Madee, and Davin Crouch visiting with us on Sunday.

Pastor Ken gave the children’s lesson. He asked them if they ever had poison ivy or skin itch problem. Two of the small one had, and one little boy got it in his eye. Pastor Ken talked about calamine lotion and medicine to stop the itch. Then he told the children about the disease leprosy and what a terrible thing it was to have leprosy back in Jesus’time on earth. Pastor Ken told them how badly people were treated and how hopeless their lives were. But Jesus helped a man; He cured the man of leprosy. Pastor Ken said when things seem hopeless, call on Jesus.

“I Do Choose, Be Made Clean” was the theme of Rev. Ken Lunsford’s sermon. He read from the bible in Mark 1:40-45.

Pastor Ken said in this day and age we cannot appreciate the fear of contracting leprosy that prevailed over the ancient world. People did not know much about the disease, but they understood how it maimed and
disfigured.

In Jesus’ day a leper by law could not get within fifty yards of a clean person. Lepers were put in pits and kept separate from their loved ones and their religious leaders. What a hopeless situation for them. The only friend a leper had was God himself.

In the story from Mark we learn of man who is a leper. He must have kept it hidden because he had not been put away in a pit. There is no one else mentioned in the text, just Jesus of Nazareth and a leper. It says “And behold a leper came to him and kneeling before him said: If you will you can make me clean.” Christ, stretching his hand, touched him saying:“I will – be clean.” And immediately his leprosy was cleansed and he walked away.

It seems a very short gospel story. Let us look at a deeper meaning. The leper did not say if you can cure me, if you are able. He said “if you will!” The man was sure and certain Christ could help him. Christ did not hesitate, He said I will.

When we are hurting it is hard to see that God is at work in our lives. When we feel like we will never have cause to smile again. Perhaps we feel our present situation will have to be lived in till the end of our days. Maybe we are all alone, enduring our lowest point.

Christ is always willing to touch the untouchable and love the un-loveable. Just ask Him to, ask will you come into my heart.

We had a real blast at the Super Bowl Party last Sunday. There was a table full of scrumptious desserts brought by our members; there were cupcakes, cookies, sugar-free cake, and a chocolate cake laced with cherries. The meal was soft beef tacos with plenty of shredded lettuce, tomatoes, and cheese. Of course chips and dips accompanied all this.

Melanie and Ronnie Belew along with Tammy and Gene Coan provided and cooked the meal. Ronnie provided the equipment needed to watch the game on a big screen, he and his family set it up and took it down. We appreciate their generosity and Christian service to the members of this congregation and their guests.

A table of senior age ladies had an intense game of Skip-Bo going while the teenagers played games on their Mac Book computers. Other “table” games were enjoyed also. Even our youngest attendees, Leah Kunselman and Joe Salinas found things to do. They stacked dominoes and laughed at the TV commercials for four hours. And no one of any age got a spanking!

Corbin Gordon had a birthday on February 3, Jill Moore will celebrate one on the 11th, and John Miller’s is 12th, Doris Morton and Butch Belew share a birthday on the 17th. Butch and Carolyn Belew’s anniversary
is the 15th.

Margaret Armstrong who is a resident of Good Tree in Stephenville has a new great-great-grandson. His name is Eli and he is a cute fella. Eli is the great-grandson of Margaret’s son Tommy Armstrong. Wow! What a
milestone.

Elizabeth Young is now a resident of Golden Age in Dublin. Elizabeth is currently rooming with our newest member, Debra Hammonds, and they are across the hall from Sibyl Hodges. The ladies are sharing and reading the Upper Room and listening to recorded Sunday services.

The congregation extends sincere sympathy to the family of Peggy Bradley Jurney. Our thoughts and prayers are with you dear friends.

This past Sunday Lee Leatherwood served as our Worship Leader. He asked for announcements, and gave the opening and offertory prayers.

Rev. Ken Lunsford titled his sermon “Everyone is Searching for You! He read from the book of Mark 1: 29-30.

Pastor Ken asked us if we ever noticed how often Jesus appears on the cover of Time and Newsweek magazine. A reporter for the Washington Post said every time Jesus is on the cover they see a spike in their sales. Jesus is still popular and commercially attractive with folks like you and
me.

Over two thousand years ago when Jesus first began his ministry He was popular with the people. Jesus went to the house of Simon Peter where he healed Simon Peter’s mother-in-law. After news of the healing Mark says “That evening after sunset the people brought to Jesus all the sick and demon possessed. The whole town gathered at the door.” They didn’t have cell phones or Twitter; they communicated the old-fashioned way, person to person.

Further on we read that Jesus left the house and went to a solitary place to pray. Simon and his friends went to look for Him, and when they found him they exclaimed:”Everyone is looking for you!”

This may sound like a cliché, but I believe that even today people are still looking for Jesus Christ. They may not know his name, they might use symbols and different terminology from what we are used to, but they are searching for Christ all the
same.

After all, He is the way, the truth, and the life. And all people need what only Christ can offer them. Everyone needs a sense of direction for their life. We need someone to follow and Jesus goes with us to lead the way. He leads us to a specific destination: life with God the Father.

He is the answer to every man, woman and young person’s deepest need. Jesus gives us purpose for our lives. We need never fear what lies ahead for He goes with us. He has been there Himself; He is the pioneer and perfecter of our faith. Our destination is sure abundant life with God
