We had to bring in another table for the Women’s Bible study; our group is growing.  It is great to have a good time and really learn what the Bible is trying to teach us.

Leta Sage, Pat Beaty, Laura Leatherwood and Judy Lunsford rode together to Stephenville High School to see and hear the “For Men Only’ Choir” give a performance.  It was very good and the choir received a standing ovation.  As we were standing in the aisle to leave the auditorium, we spoke to Rev. Dean and Ruthie Bradley and Kathy Pendleton.  It was fun to go out and see good, family entertainment.

We hear through the grapevine that Don Mitchell had an 80th birthday.  Well, congratulations!

James and Leta Sage asked for continued prayers for their brother-in-law, Charles Starkey. Charles is facing some difficult heath issues and needs our fervent prayer as does his wife Donna.  Donna is Leta’s sister and the daughter of Norma Sharp.

Nancy Wooldridge served as our Worship Leader and Kaitlyn Gordon performed as acolyte. We appreciate their efforts.

Nancy read a letter from the Methodist Children’s Home in Waco thanking our congregation for their Christmas donation.

Nancy also asked for prayers for Dr. Ron Huse who is dealing with serious health problems.

We need to remember Debbie Hammonds and get by to visit her at Golden Age.  She misses coming to church, but she fell and can’t get out and go for a while.

Lisa Leatherwood announced that she was very proud of her brothers and sisters in First United Methodist.  Lisa said everyone she reminded of their supplies to bring for the Community Table Dinner answered “they had already brought them to the kitchen.”  We are A-Ok and ready for blast off!

Laura Leatherwood brought a cell phone to Children’s Time. She asked the youngsters how many things can you do with a cell phone.  They said you can play games and take photos.  Laura said you can send pictures to a friend, research a subject, you can call someone and if they don’t answer, you can leave a message.

Laura said that is what Jesus did in the book of Matthew when He asked Andrew and Peter and later James and John to follow Him and be fishers of people.  Jesus left us a message, He told us that we all need to be fishing for people.  We need to tell our friends about God and Jesus.

Rev. Ken Lunsford preached about “When Christians Don’t Fish!”  He based his sermon on Matthew 4: 12-23.

Pastor Ken told a story about Max Lucado.  It seems Max, his dad, and a family friend went on a fishing trip, but the weather turned very bad, they had cold wind and then sleet. At first they made the best of it reading and telling stories, but eventually they became irritable and edgy.  By the time they gave up on fishing and returned home they were flat-out grumpy.  Max says “When those who are called to fish don’t fish, they fight.”

Whether we fish for fish or fish for souls, when energy to be used outside is kept inside, the result is explosive.  Instead of casting nets, we cast stones.  Instead of being fishers of the lost; we become critics of the saved.

Let’s face it; we give lip service to the call to bring people into the family of Christ, like most churches we gave up fishing.  Oh we’re willing to accept some if the fish leaps into the boat by itself.  But we are not willing to do the hard work it takes to cast the net and pull them in.  Remember Max Lucado’s warning: when fishermen don’t fish problems arise. As long as believers are working together for a common goal there is harmony and unity.  When work stops the talking starts over who is the greatest.

We have so much to do as the body of Christ. Christ calls us to make a difference.  Christ wants us to model His compassion, forgiveness and passion for righting wrongs.  What does it say to the un-churched or non-believer if we cannot get along with each other?

It is time we took the risk and got back to our primary task of making disciples of Jesus Christ.

The Community Table Spaghetti Dinner will soon be here!  Our first shared meal is on Wednesday, 1-29, from 6:00-8:00 PM.  Come on out and join us in the fellowship hall.  We are at 630 Highland Ave. The meal is free, there is no “hidden cost” so bring a friend or the children in your neighborhood.

The Women’s Bible study continues to meet on Wednesdays at 10:00 AM.  We are taking a journey through the Psalms of ascent which are Psalms 120 through 134.

Elizabeth Young had a surprise 90th birthday party in the Clay Annex. Elizabeth is Dublin’s oldest cheerleader!  Her children and grandchildren had the tables decorated with photos from the past.  The cake was delicious and the punch was tasty, it also had raspberries floating in it so it had to be good.

I had a phone call from Virginia Stephen, she had two stories to tell me.  One was what a great birthday party she had at her apartment complex in Stephenville.  Friends and family came from all over to eat and eat and visit too.  Virginia also wanted her church family to know she had a cancerous growth removed from her eyelid just days after her party.  She asked for our prayers and would appreciate all her friends’ prayers at this time.  Call the church office to get Virginia’s address and phone number and send her your good wishes.

James and Leta Sage had children and grandchildren in church with them last Sunday. They had come to visit and celebrate Leta’s birthday.

Pastor Ken Lunsford and Pat Leatherwood along with other members of the Dublin Rotary Club, grilled several hundred hamburger patties at the high school last Saturday. There was a Power Lifting Tournament and other activities for young athletes going on.

When Pastor Ken came home he could not convince our dog that there were no hamburgers in his pockets, Ken smelled like a walking Dairy Queen.

Laura Leatherwood talked to the children about a whistle.  She said there was a story from Benjamin Franklin’s youth about a boy willing to pay too much for a toy whistle. That started a saying of “He paid too much for his whistle” which meant someone made too great a sacrifice to acquire or achieve something.

Laura read the children one of her favorite Bible verses from Mark 8:36 “For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and loose his own soul?”

Laura gave out whistles to the children and to our organist, Leta Sage.  Leta was the only one who blew her whistle in church; she tried to play “Jesus Loves Me” on it.

“Andrew brought Simon to Jesus; who are we bringing?”  This was the title of Rev. Ken Lunsford’s sermon last Sunday.

The Bible tells of many sets of siblings.  Some of the more famous are Cain and Abel, Isaac and Ishmael, Mary, Martha and Lazarus.  Some of these sibling relationships turned out well, but some turned out bad.  In almost all of these situations, however, one sibling became more prominent than the other.

Andrew was a disciple of John the Baptist.  One day John saw Jesus passing by and said, “Look, the Lamb of God!”  Andrew went to find his brother Simon and tell him, “We have found the Messiah.”  Andrew brought Simon to Jesus; Jesus looked at him and said, “You are Simon son of John. You will be called Cephas.” This means Peter.

Andrew left John the Baptist to follow Jesus. He was the first disciple Jesus called, but for the rest of the New Testament, Andrew is over-shadowed by his brother Simon Peter. Plenty is said about Peter, he was “The Rock on which Christ would build His church!”   A good epitaph for Andrew’s tombstone would be “He brought his brother to Jesus.”   That would be a good epitaph for all of us.

Most people who come to church do so because a friend invited them, and yet few church members ever invite a friend to church.  Many of you are more comfortable witnessing for Christ with your actions rather than your words.  But I want to ask you to prayerfully ask God if there is something more you can do to point someone to Jesus.  It may be a neighbor or a family member. Do it in a loving way.

There is an old spiritual titled, “There is a Balm in Gilead.”   The second verse goes like this:

“If you cannot preach like Peter, if you cannot pray like Paul, you can tell the love of Jesus and say, ‘He died for all.’  There is a balm in Gilead to make the wounded whole; There is a balm in Gilead to heal the sin sick soul.”

Wow, there are a lot of birthdays in our congregation this month.  Zeke Miller, Cole Moore, Virginia Stephen, Raymond Salinas, and Cameron Price have already enjoyed their big day.  Leta Sage, Ronnie Belew, Nolan Miller, Barbara Hilliard, Elizabeth Young, Brady Moore, Gene Coan and Sammy Moore will be celebrating in the second half of January.

The responsibilities for bringing food and supplies for the “Shared Table” have been filled.  Everyone is looking forward to the meal on 1-29.

Those having anniversaries in January are David and Annette Cleveland and Gene and Tammy Coan.  We wish these folks many happy days ahead.

Prayers were asked for Jerry Bolton.

We had five visitors with us last Sunday.  This congregation is always glad to see a new face in worship.

The first tenant of what we believe is; God’s infinite love is available to all.

Mary Haley served as our Worship leader and Laura Leatherwood continues to bring the children’s lesson.

Laura brought a tape measure to show the youngsters. She measured one boy’s shoe sole and then asked what else she should measure. The children wanted to see how long a pew was, so with their help, Laura measured a front pew. It was about 152 inches.

Then Laura asked the children if there were things impossible to measure and a little girl said ”Jesus’ love was impossible to measure because He died for us.”  Laura said that was right and she was so happy a child could answer the question.  All the children were given a tape measure to keep for there own.

Rev. Ken Lunsford titled his sermon “God Shows No Partiality, Do You?”  The scripture reading was from Acts 10:34-43.

Peter was one of Jesus’ first disciples. He was with Jesus from the beginning of His Galilean ministry and on until the bitter end at the Sanhedrin examination.  Peter saw the empty tomb and witnessed the risen Christ.  He experienced the Ascension and Pentecost.  But it took all these things before Peter finally understood the world-changing wonder that was playing out before his very eyes.

In the Gentile household of Cornelius Peter says “I truly understand that God shows no partiality, but that in every nation anyone who fears Him and does what is right is acceptable to Him.”  And just think it only took watching Jesus extend His love, compassion, and healing power on lepers, Gentiles, tax collectors, and sinners of all kinds for Peter to “get it.”  It only took the miracle of the resurrection, the demonstration of God’s power over life and death, and the infusing gift of the Holy Spirit to give Peter this final insight. All are welcome; all are embraced by the same patient Spirit and Christ’s redeeming gift.

What does that mean for you and me today?  Where will we be willing to go?  With whom will we sit at the table?

What goes up must come down and our Christmas decorations and trees were taken down and put away on 01-6. We appreciate all those who helped with this project on such a cold day.

“A Community Shared Table” is the name of the new project First Methodist is planning.  Stormy Armstrong is the Chair of the committee that held a planning session on Monday, 1-6.  We will cook a meal and share it with the Dublin community every month at no charge.  There will be more information coming in future columns.

A new Bible study on Psalms began on Wednesday, 1-8 at 10:00 am.  Leta Sage is directing this study and we are looking forward to understanding more about the Bible.

Our congregation extends sympathy to the family and friends of Wilber Rasberry.  His wife Winnie is in our prayers.

Neva Smith informed us that her sister-in-law, Juanita Erwin, had passed away.  Our sympathy goes out to her family.

Neva suffered a fall last week but she has “bounced back.”  She said thank goodness she had a hard head.  This church is thankful also.

Stormy Armstrong shared with us that her brother, Chris Humphries, came to Texas for the Christmas holidays.  Chris had a good visit with his mother, Pat Humphries, in College Station. Chris has left on his journey back to Afghanistan and our prayers go with him.

Juanita Duncan enjoyed a visit from her niece who attends Clemson University.

Jennifer Miller served as our Worship Leader last Sunday and did a great job.  Jennifer is our newest member.

Lisa Leatherwood gave the children’s lesson.  Lisa brought a rope to have a “tug of war” with.  She tugged and Joe Salinas tugged on the other end.  Joe won!

Then Lisa and her husband Pat tugged on one end and Joe tugged and Joe won again. Lisa told us when God is with you, you can do great things.  She told Joe as he goes through life things will try to tug him in the wrong direction, but have faith God is with him and be strong.

“New Year: New Name” was the title of Rev. Ken Lunsfords sermon.  It was taken from Ephesians 1:3-14.

The New Year is a time for reflection. It is also a time we face a new beginning.  We have hopes that things will be different and better.

That may be why some of us come to church.  We hope that the Holy Spirit may fall afresh on us and the future will be full of possibilities and positive change.

Ephesians 1 is very upbeat.  It teaches us we are God’s chosen ones; His elect.  God wants something better for us.

In Isaiah 43 God says through the prophet Isaiah, “Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing.”

A new name symbolizes new possibilities.  God loves giving people new names. Abram became Abraham, the “Father of Multitudes,” and Sari He called Sarah. Jacob was renamed Israel, which means “Prince of God.” Simon Peter became Peter, “The Rock.”

God is calling us “Forgiven.” “While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”   God has called us blessed, chosen, holy, blameless, adopted sons and daughters of God.  Why do you call yourself a failure, a loser, not worthy?  Some people talk about others and condemn them. They say “People never change. They are hopeless.”  But God knows better.  Never underestimate the power of God in your life or anyone else’s life.
