On Saturday, 1-26, Pastor Ken Lunsford and the “Four Amens” sang for the residents of Golden Age Home. The group consists of Tom and Rita Wilson, Ken Lunsford and Judy Lunsford. The music was well received and most of the audience sang along with them.

At the Sunday service the Worship Leader duties were shared by Nancy Wooldridge and Lee Leatherwood. They both do a good job.

Laura Leatherwood taught the children’s lesson and she brought a sack of shoes to church! Laura said different shoes had different uses. Running shoes were to run in, flip flops were good at the beach or swimming pool and heavy boots could be worn for hiking or mountain climbing. Shoes have different purposes and people have different purposes. We each have a purpose in church to do God’s work.

Rev. Ken Lunsford preached about 1 Corinthians 12:12-31. He titled his lesson “Body of Christ, Many Members!”

Pastor Ken told us about a Japanese process of repairing precious ceramic ware. It is a restoration process called “Kintsugi” that seeks to make broken ceramics better than new. The object is first repaired, and then the repair line of the break is outlined with a lacquer that contains real gold. The final piece has gold lines and streaks across the surface; it has not been just restored but transformed.

Saint Paul is dealing with the Corinthian Christians as they are trying to build up a church, a living body of Christ community. The Corinthians were concerned with things like who is best and what spiritual gift is the greatest. Paul uses the metaphor of the body and its parts to explain that in the new body of Christ who is best has no importance; all the parts are necessary and must work together.

Paul also urged the Corinthians and all Christians to notice that the most broken within their community were the ones who could bear the marks of healing they had experienced at God’s hands. The more damaged and repaired, the greater was the transformation reflected to the world.

The healing life-altering power of the Holy Spirit at baptism, of participating in the body of Christ, takes all our blemishes and sculpts them into beauty marks. All of us bruised and battered people have broken places where the true power of the Spirit is released through the gold of grace.

Jaxon Salinas was presented for baptism last Sunday by his parents Adrianne and Raymond Salinas. Jaxson was well behaved and didn’t cry at all. His big brother Joe was in attendance along with three pews full of family and friends.

Wanda Myers, our church secretary, is thrilled to be a grandparent. Wanda’s daughter has a fine baby boy whose name is Colton Rex Cunningham.

The congregation extends sympathy to the family and friends of Robert (Bob) Crouch Jr. Bob’s funeral was held in the sanctuary of our church and it was filled to over flowing. Pastor Ronnie Horton, minister at the Assembly of God Church and a friend of Bob’s, officiated the service.

After the funeral service a luncheon was provided for the Crouch family in the Clay Annex. The kitchen crew served approximately 80 people with donations of food from our members and the Dublin community.

Big thanks go to ladies who organize the family luncheons, cook and clean up the annex, also Pastor Ken Lunsford proved to be an excellent dishwasher.

We have new attendance registers in the sanctuary so be sure to fill them out each Sunday and the ushers will collect them at the center aisle.

“Variety of Spiritual Gifts” was the title of Rev. Ken Lunsford’s sermon. It was gleaned from 1st Corinthians.

Pastor Ken talked about service. He asked us what we called the place we got gasoline years ago. We said a service station. He reminded us the attendant pumped the gas, checked the oil, checked the tire pressure and waved you off with a friendly thank you.

Paul’s lesson on “spiritual gifts” was to teach the community at Corinth that whatever their individual gifts might be, they all came from the same source. They were supplied by the Holy Spirit and should be governed by the Holy Spirit. That Spirit calls us to be “in the service” for the common good, with the Body of Christ.

Every Christian is in the service to all humankind. Pastor Ken took a microphone out into the congregation and asked individuals about what they were doing to serve their fellow man. Several members recalled projects and actions that helped people. When we take Holy Communion we recite “Make us one with Christ, one with each other, and one in service to all mankind.” The heart of Christianity lies in self-sacrifice.

Sunday, 01-06, was the 12th day of Christmas on the church calendar. We were still singing carols and closing out the holidays. That afternoon the decorations came down and were put away. It is a monumental job and we appreciate Stormy Armstrong, Nancy Wooldridge and Cliff Wooldridge for doing this chore.

Laura Leatherwood served as Worship Leader. Those assisting with Holy Communion were, David Cleveland, Ricky Rowe and Cliff Wooldridge.

Annette and David Cleveland celebrated an anniversary on 1-02, Tammy and Gene Coan’s anniversary was 1-07.

There are lots of birthdays in our congregation in January. Cole Moore has a birthday on 1-08, Virginia Stephen on 1-11, Raymond Salinas on 1-13, Cameron Price on 1-15, Leta Sage on 1-17 and Ronnie Belew on 1-18. Remember to wish these friends a happy day by email or greeting card.

We need to keep our prayer list updated, so call or email the office with your information. Also let our secretary, Wanda Myers, know when names can be removed as well.

“An Opossum Faith” was the title of Rev. Ken Lunsford’s sermon. If anyone could preach on possums, Pastor Ken can, having been a Texas State Game Warden for 32 years. The Bible text read for this message was Matthew 2:1-12, it is about the Wise Men from the east who follow the star of Bethlehem.

Pastor Ken began by warning us not to leave pet food out overnight, because chances are a wild critter, usually an opossum, will eat up the food.

The phrase “playing possum” comes from the defensive ploy used by opossums. They fall over, go stiff and look dead as a doornail. When their enemy walks away the possum gets up and trots off to eat more of Fido’s food.

We humans can “play possum” also; we can shut down and stop reacting when we are confronted by scary, intimidating or over-whelming situations. We get rigid in our responses and unmoving regardless of what is going on around us.

The wise men from far away appear in the Holy City of Jerusalem, they declare with certainty there is a sign of the arrival of a new “king of the Jews.” The whole reason the Temple had been built had come true, the Messiah was here on earth. But the priest and scribes who lived and worked in the Temple and studied the Torah everyday of their lives remained in Jerusalem frozen and unconcerned. They “played possum” with the possibilities of the best of “good news.”

The church of the twenty-first century has been entrusted with proclaiming the good news that Emmanuel, God with us, has come. We have a personal Messiah in the reality of the present. The incarnate power of Jesus the Messiah, the Anointed One, has changed things forever. Nothing can be the same since Christ’s birth. Maybe that is why those who counseled Herod didn’t make the journey with the magi to Bethlehem. They knew if they went it would change everything, no wonder they played possum.

The New Year is a time to “re-boot” our vision and our values. Find a church or come back to church, it is a better way to live. If you are a Christian, live like one. Will you make the trip with the Magi; to kneel before the child?

We had a  chili dog party followed by carol singing in the Clay Annex on 12-19.   Those  fire grilled wieners were tasty and the carols got us in the Christmas spirit.   A big thanks to our pianist, Pat Beaty, for leading us in song.

On Sunday, 12-23, the congregation was blessed to hear Elise Hall sing “Do You Hear  What I Hear?”  Elise is the daughter of Laura and Jim Leatherwood.

Rev. Ken  Lunsford titled his sermon that day “Christ Born anew in Your Heart Today.”

The Candle Light Service on Christmas Eve was beautiful and well received.  I believe we never tire of hearing the story of Christ’s birth as told in the Book  of Luke.  Whether it is little Linus from the Charlie Brown comic strip or a  friend from our church reading the words, they are comforting and so dear.

Several  members took part in presenting the Christmas program.    Then there was finger  foods and warm apple juice in the foyer.  Thank you to all who worked on this  event.

12-30 was a fifth Sunday and of course we had to eat again.  There was a covered dish dinner after church.

Pastor  Ken’s sermon was “Walking by Faith.”  This message was gleaned from the second  chapter of Luke.  It tells “the rest of the story” of what happened after Jesus’ birth.

Pastor Ken said we who live in freedom and prosperity cannot understand the terror that was  in Mary and Joseph’s heart as they fled King Herod.  We don’t know what it is to  be a refugee in a strange land.  What is the message in this ancient story for  our lives today?

First,  we need to acknowledge that there is no promise in Scripture that things will  always go our way just because we follow Jesus. There is no promise that God’s  elect will have a smooth road.  The “prosperity gospel” has become very popular.  Just give your heart to Jesus and you will proper in every way.  I suspect if  you presented the prosperity gospel to Mary and Joseph, they would
laugh in your  face.  Mary and Joseph didn’t jet down to Cairo and take up residence at the  Hilton Hotel.  Life was unimaginably hard for them just as it has been hard for  millions of believers in Christ over the centuries since.

We are  promised though, that God will always be with us when we follow Jesus.  Mary and  Joseph were not alone in Egypt.  God’s watchful eye was upon them, and God’s  hand was beneath them.  Mary and Joseph did see the promises of God fulfilled in  their lives.  They could lean on the Rock that would not fail.

God does  not bribe us to be Christians, if He did that would not be walking by faith.   No, God allows us to be tried, tested, and sometimes terrified.

I can’t  tell you that 2013 will be your best year ever.  But I can tell you this: We are  never alone while walking by faith, the same God who provided for Mary and  Joseph and baby Jesus in Egypt is the God who watches over you and me.  Happy  New Year!
